Description

Playing with Movement is about solving “movement problems,” such as how to complete your first marathon, recover from back pain, put on more muscle, or improve agility on the soccer field. Play means moving in a way that is fun, exploratory, variable, and personally meaningful. The most capable movers – kids, animals, and athletes – develop skill and fitness through play, not “working out.” But the mainstream approach to sport training and physical therapy is all work no play. It is focused on movements that are boring, repetitive, planned, stressful, and intrinsically meaningless. This stems from viewing the body as a machine to be “fixed,” instead of an organic system that can evolve, grow, and learn. The arguments in this book are not based in romantic feel-good reasoning, but hard evidence drawn from diverse fields of study, including the sciences of play, complex systems, pain, motor control, exercise physiology, and psychology. They show that the best pathway to movement health is found not by tracking data or following algorithms, but through curious exploration of the physical world. If you want to take control of your movement health in a way that is fun, meaningful, and empowering, and learn some fascinating science on the way, this book is for you.

Review From the reviews:”This book focuses on sports injuries of the foot and succeeds in both covering the most common injuries and reviewing the gamut of how to treat these common injuries from office to operating room to rehabilitation. Ò€¦ The target audience is quite broad, including athletic trainers, physical therapists, primary care sports medicine physicians, orthopedic surgeons, podiatrists, and any practitioners who treat foot injuries or holistically care for athletes.” (Mark R. Hutchinson, Doody’s Book Reviews, June, 2014)

Description

Whether you call them work-related upper limb disorders (WRULDs), cumulative trauma disorders (CTDS), or occupational overuse syndromes (OOSs), these conditions are a cause of pain, disability and suffering to workers worldwide. These designations often imply that their causes are related to work, but the supporting evidence can be unclear. Transparency is important, especially when it is necessary to form a connection with work factors to obtain treatment or compensation. This book addresses the dilemma.

Description

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the practical aspects of contrast echocardiography. It also covers all the material in the guidelines published by the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) in 2018 and the recommendations set out by the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) in 2017. Contrast echocardiography at present is only used in 5-10% of cases, but this is expected to grow rapidly following the recommendations of the ASE and EACVI. The chapters cover the approved indications and provide practical advice on how to administer the contrast agents and how to optimize the recordings as well as how to deal with the pitfalls. The reader will find all the information on how to use contrast agents for assessment of shunts, LV volumes and function as well as myocardial diseases and masses. Detailed protocols are included for stress echocardiography and myocardial perfusion imaging. Other topics covered include the use of contrast agents for coronary sonography and transesophageal echocardiography.

Review This is a worthwhile contribution and it is useful to the intended audience. It is a comprehensive book, covering all of the important issues in this industry. There are other books in this area, but most are written on specific topics that are all covered in this book. -Lawrence P Carey, Temple University School of Pharmacy

Basic Physiology for Anaesthetists 2nd Edition

Reviews

As a nursing instructor, I am always looking for good resources for my own learning as well as learning for my students. I take my students to a stroke rehab unit for clinical rotations and therefore when I saw this book, I was very interested in it. This is a very comprehensive text in that it starts off looking at the epidemiology of stroke, cost, policy, management strategies, and research & education, and then takes the reader through the various aspects of stroke as it affects the patient (what a stroke is, risk factors, nutritional aspects, oral care after stroke, communication issues such as aphasia, physical impairments after a stroke, and ends with recovery, rehab, promoting continence, emotional and cognitive changes post stroke, and even looking at supporting the caregivers of someone who has experienced stroke. My favorite part of this book is the abundance of case studies. I find that real life case studies that bring clinical situations to the forefront or for students can bring the clinical into the classroom is a real plus. This book has case studies for each chapter and most chapters have at least two case studies. The book is well researched with an abundance of references for each chapter and their are 14 chapters. If you are looking for a comprehensive resource for stroke, this is an excellent resource.
