Review “In light of the amount of information in recent years about testing and management of hearing loss in infants, this book is much needed. Although scholarly in nature, the material is quite readable. The authors detail what chapters are better geared toward specific audiences. The advancement of newborn hearing screening has allowed for more options when it comes to intervention for children with hearing loss, therefore having this information in an updated format that is easily accessible is very important for this population of children and their families. The extensive audience includes students (undergraduate and graduate) and professionals working with children with hearing loss and their families, such as listening and spoken language specialists, speech-language pathologists, audiologists, early childhood instructors, and, possibly most importantly, parents and individuals newly diagnosed with hearing loss. Although the information can be quite technical, the authors do a good job of pointing out what chapters will be most helpful to which audience members. Both Dr. Cole and Dr. Flexer have extensive experience working with people with hearing impairments, and they have authored numerous publications and have teaching and clinical experience.” –Yvana Uranga-Hernandez, PhD, CCC-SLP, Biola University, in Doody’s Book Reviews

Description

For years the administrative of anesthesia was extremely dangerous and risky. Because of this the surgeon and anesthesiologist had to balance the risks and benefits for each patient before proceeding with surgery. In the last two decades the care of the surgical patient has changed dramatically. New equipment, monitors and pharmacologic agents have transformed surgical technique and improved outcomes. Patients once deemed “too sick” for the operating room are found frequently on operating room schedules nationwide.

Review “This is an important new book, dealing with what can seem a heart sink symptom and which is often referred to Otolaryngology as a last resort. The poor physicians have tried their bronchodilators and steroids, eliminated any vestige of gastric secretion and, in despair, wonder about ‘the sinuses’, if only to share the problem. Much here is novel, especially the major input from laryngologists and rhinologists. At a first flick through the book, features like Take Home Points and especially the boxed ‘Thinking Outside the Box’ in every chapter really appealed. I quickly regretted only getting this to read at three months after retiring from clinical practice!” –Liam M Flood FRCS FRCSI, Middlesbrough UK, in the Journal of Laryngology & Otology (2019)”This is a thorough overview of chronic cough with up-to-date references in which experts in their fields discuss etiologies and treatments. The book discusses a multidisciplinary treatment paradigm and covers cough etiologies and treatment possibilities from the specialist’s area of expertise. Each chapter provides avenues of consideration when approaching the evaluation of a chronic cough patient. The references to both landmark studies and more recent publications are particularly noteworthy. The “think outside the box” on controversial and less-controversial ideas surrounding chronic cough are particularly engaging. I am particularly pleased with the contribution of four speech pathologists to this publication.” –Jonelyn Langenstein, MM, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-S, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Doody’s Book Reviews (May 2019)
