Description

A survey of over 900 trainees at the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych) in the United Kingdom showed that over three-quarters of psychiatry trainees desired some knowledge and training in the field of neuropsychiatry. Recent years have given rise to a substantial global focus on integrating neurosciences and neuropsychiatry in psychiatric training. Neuropsychiatry forms an important part of the psychiatric curriculum and is examined in theory and in clinical exams. Similarly, neuropsychiatry is also of interest to neurology trainees, and it is increasingly recognised that all neurology trainees should have some knowledge and experience in neuropsychiatry. Despite this growing interest, there is a dearth of neuropsychiatry textbooks specifically geared towards trainees and other clinicians who are not specialist in the field.

Review “The text certainly delivers on its promise of concise information covering a wide range of topics. … This is an excellent resource for those unversed in the discipline of pain management, particularly medical students or junior residents. … it does serve as a superb introduction with relevant information for those new to the topic.” (Mehdi Sefidgar, Canadian Journal of Anesthesia, Journal canadien d’anesthésie, Vol. 62, July, 2015)”This is a quick review of pain topics frequently found on examinations. Each topic is covered in one to two pages and the entire book can be reviewed in one sitting right before an examination. … The primary audience is readers sitting for a pain examination but the book will also be of use to physicians at all levels of training and to physicians who see patients with chronic pain conditions. The author is an experienced clinician and examiner.” (Tariq M. Malik, Doody’s Book Reviews, October, 2014)

Description

The perioperative care of individuals with neurologic compromise is critically important, yet it is only one dimension of the rich relationship between anaesthesiology and the neurosciences. The mechanism of everyday therapeutic interventions such as anaesthesia and analgesia is exciting neuroscience in its own right. At the new frontier of outcomes studies lies the question of how the perioperative period might impact the brain. For example, questions related to anaesthetic neurotoxicity, delirium, and cognitive dysfunction pose critical challenges for the field.

Description

From the inception of PiP, it was recognised that developing clinical guidelines together, was an efficient use of time and would assist PiP in meeting one of its objectives, “to improve the quality of services for children”.Developing quality guidelines that would be useful at the patient / doctor interface, was a very challenging agenda. Consequently, PiP was delighted to join with The Bedside Clinical Guidelines Partnership (BCGP), who had already developed a methodology and a team approach to developing adult medical guidelines, which had been implemented in many of the PiP Member organisations. The completed clinical guidelines are available in the handbook. The guidelines are reviewed on a 2-yearly cycle; they help consultants, junior doctors and nurses maintain high quality and consistent practice. The guidelines have continued to be successful with the number developed increasing each year; there are now over 90 Guidelines.
