Description

This volume brings together work from leading researchers in the fields of developmental disorders of binocular vision, strabismus, and both infantile and acquired forms of nystagmus. It contains four sections. The first section, Basic Concepts of Stable Vision and Gaze, deals with psychophysical aspects of infantile forms of nystagmus and the relative contributions of extraocular proprioception and efference (corollary discharge). It also contains an accessible review of current notions of spatial and temporal visual functions and spatial constancy in infantile nystagmus syndrome and latent nystagmus. The second section, New Models and Techniques for Studying Gaze Stability, reviews animal and development models for strabismus, amblyopia, and nystagmus. It also contains novel optical methods for managing the visual consequences of nystagmus and a study of the potential ill effects of video displays on children’s response to near viewing. The third section, New Therapies for Congenital Nystagmus, presents basic genetic studies and clinical trials of drug and surgical treatment of those patients with infantile forms of nystagmus. The final section,General Aspects of Normal and Abnormal Gaze Control, pulls together a range of contributions dealing with normal gaze control, infantile nystagmus, and acquired disorders of eye movements, including new treatment measures. This book will be a valuable resource for all scientists and practitioners interested in developmental disorders of vision.

⭐This book is very informative and helpful, for both me and my partner.

⭐I liked this book very much. It covered a lot of practical questions in a clear, concise way. There weren’t too many technical terms used so it was easy to understand and in the back of the book there were appendixes with more information on where to get help, definitions of terms used and much more. I would reccommend this book to any newly diagnosed person it helps explain what is going on and what to expect. It is also a good book for family and friends to read because it gives insight into what is happening to the person with the AMD.

⭐I was so sad and depressed when I found out I had MD. It started as the dry type and progressed to the more serious wet type. I finally learned how to help myself deal with this. I get shots in my eye and take Maximum Eye vitamins. My Retina doctor was so impressed with my progress, improving by 95%. I owe a lot of this to reading this book and learning how to help my eyes. I would recommend it to anyone who has MD.

⭐If you are a person who has just been diagnosed with age related macular degeneration, you will find this a useful book. I returned it as it was not what I was looking for: a simple book to encourage my 83 year old mother who has pretty good vision that is not deteriorating. The book is aimed at people more affected with this condition than she is. She may need it later down the road, but hopefully not!

⭐As a newly diagnosed macular degeneration person, I am learning what to expect and it is helping me identify the changes that I am experiencing. The book is helping validate the feelings and changes I have. After I finish the book, I plan on passing it on to my family. It is so difficult to explain what I actually see but the book explains it perfectly.I

⭐Ordered this book after receiving the Macular Degeneration diagnosis from my Eye Dr. He gave me no informatin about things I could do to prevent futther damage or any other info. This book is great- learned lots of things I can do to help myself and where to receive additional help. I would likely recommend this book to anyone receiving this ARMD diagnosis.

⭐I searched for data on macular degeneration after being diagnosed. I bought this book along with several others. Material found in it has helped me cope with the idea that there is no cure for it. There are treatments however and things to do to help yourself. I found this book most helpful.

⭐This book was in a list we received from our support group without comment – no pushing, just resrouces. It has some good information but it “sounds like” the author is really full of himself. After visiting their website, and reading archives of others with impaired vision and AMD, it appears he’s pushing products against physicians recommendations, and many on his site seemingly think he’s a doctor, or have an adoration-complex with this author. No doubt, he means well, but overall as my own doctors have recommended, “always talk to your physician before taking anything” and that includes supplements pushed on a website or in a book. The author’s reference to independent living training is spot on – we entered that some years back. Overall, as our group facilitator always says, we need to focus on the things we can change to deal with this disease, not fret about alternative choices, etc. “just talk to your physician.” She is correct. For the record, my spouse has had AMD for 10 years and so we tried this book. I wouldn’t buy it again. The National Federation for the Blind, and NIH has all the accurate and most up to date information one needs, and there’s no pushing one drug treatment over another without adequate replicated studies.

⭐Must reading for anyone afflicted with this disease.

⭐This is absolutely essential reading for anyone who has been diagnosed with either wet or dry macular degeneration. To be diagnosed is totally frightening and there are hundreds of questions that people want to ask which are answered. Just as important is information you didn’t even know you needed – about what treatments work and why, what you can do to slow down the disease, ways of coping that you might not have thought of.It is written by someone who has had the disease for many years and who runs a support forum in a non-hysterical and informative way. A total must.

⭐Very informative book, a must for any one newly diagnosed with AMD, a lot of encouragement given, it certainly gave me huge insight into this very distressing disease.

Description

Keeping up to date with advances in comprehensive ophthalmology and in the ophthalmic sub-specialties is extremely difficult because of the accelerating rapidity with which new information and technology become available and the diminishing time and opportunity for practitioners and trainees to read and learn. The first edition of Albert and Jakobiec’s Principles and Practice (1994) was conceived with the idea of utilizing an electronic, updated version in which the chapters were revised by the chapter authors on an annual or semi-annual basis, but the technology was not sufficiently advanced to achieve this goal. Subsequent editions (2000 and 2008) were organized by Saunders and the last published by Elsevier (of which Springer has obtained the complete rights to move forward with the 4th edition). For nearly three decades, this text has provided its readers with authoritative and comprehensive coverage of clinical ophthalmology, written and edited by a group of authors who represented a “Who’s Who” in ophthalmology. By using Springer’s Meteor platform, with its ability to allow authors and editors access to updating their chapters online annually/semi-annually, and with the recruitment of select chapter authors, this work’s usefulness as the standard text in ophthalmology will be maintained and expanded upon by Springer. The 4th edition of this comprehensive and authoritative text is written by hundreds of the most distinguished authorities from around the world and edited by four leaders in the field, providing today’s best answers to every question that arises in ophthalmology practice. Richly illustrated with thousands of high quality, full color, clinically-relevant images, Albert and Jakobiec’s Principles and Practice of Ophthalmology, 4th Edition covers every scientific and clinical principle in ophthalmology, ensuring that the reader will always be able to find the guidance needed to diagnose and manage patients’ ocular problems and meet today’s standards of care. Written for practicing ophthalmologists and trainees, this book delivers in-depth guidance on new diagnostic approaches, operative techniques, and treatment options, as well as coherent explanations of new scientific concept and its clinical importance. The 4th edition will prove to be the source every practicing clinician needs to efficiently and confidently overcome any clinical challenge they may face. Updates include new chapters on anterior and posterior segment diseases, as well as chapters more focused on treatment, plus thousands of new, high-quality, color images and illustrations, updated references, and information on the most cutting-edge technology used by clinicians in their practices today. Additionally, readers will enjoy the same, user-friendly, full-color design they remember from the previous edition, complete with many at-a-glance summary tables, algorithms, boxes, and diagrams that allow the reader to locate the assistance needed more rapidly than ever.

An Introduction to the Visual System 2nd Edition (2008) by Martin J. Tovée PDF

Ebook Info

  • Published: 2008
  • Number of pages: 238 pages
  • Format: PDF
  • File Size: 7.07 MB
  • Authors: Martin J. TovĂ©e

Description

Building on the successful formula of the first edition, Martin Tovée offers a concise but detailed account of how the visual system is organised and functions to produce visual perception. He takes his readers from first principles; the structure and function of the eye and what happens when light enters, to how we see and process images, recognise patterns and faces, and through to the most recent discoveries in molecular genetics and brain imaging, and how they have uncovered a host of new advances in our understanding of how visual information is processed within the brain. Incorporating new material throughout, including almost 50 new images, every chapter has been updated to include the latest research, and culminates in helpful key points, which summarise the lessons learnt. This book is an invaluable course text for students within the fields of psychology, neuroscience, biology and physiology.

⭐Pretty good overview of the visual system, although I have seen better explanations in a neural physiology book.

⭐An Introduction to the Visual System was exactly as advertised. The relatively quick read provides an overview of the entire visual system of the brain. The book begins with a detailed description of the physiology of the eyes and the relevant physical and biochemical functional structures. The optical physics and photochemistry are glossed over in favor of giving the reader a slightly broader systems view of the eyes. Color vision is discussed in detail discussing the way three types of human cones allow for color vision. The biochemical properties of photopigments are glossed over in favor of a broader perspective. The evolutionary basis of color vision and problems arising in color defects are briefly explained. The text next discusses the organization of the visual system in a very broad sense. Cortical localization and the anatomy of visual organization are discussed with emphasis on the primary visual cortex. The modular organization of the primary visual cortex is emphasized, discussing cortical receptive fields, color vision, directionality, texture, based on the modular organization of the primary visual cortex. The remainder of the text discusses higher level visual functions. Development of the neural system is discussed in detail citing numerous animal studies of monocular and binocular deprivation. A chapter is devoted to the complex task of maintaining color constancy. Various studies are cited demonstrating the very complex nature of organizing a system of cortical neurons, some wavelength dependent and others “color context” dependent in order to use color recognition of objects for our benefit. The higher level brain functions of object perception and recognition and motion were especially fascinating. Citing various studies the author seems to suggest that complex higher cortical regions of the brain have large cortical receptive fields that integrate lower level cortical processing to respond to specific types of objects. “It has been suggested that the simple shapes coded for by the elaborate cells can form a `visual alphabet’ from which a representation of an object can be constructed” (p.130). This proposition has tremendous implications for the study of visual perception if not consciousness itself. The discussion of motion processing the visual system in equally engrossing. The techniques of saccades, (rapid movement of the eye) stereoscoping (using differences in each eyes perception to create depth perception) and the organization of directional modularity in the V5 section of the brain provide neural basis for generating what the author refers to as “The illusion of continuity”. An entire chapter is devoted the perception of the face. A seemingly trivial matter, the author explains through the use of PET scan and fMRI evidence that the primate brain really has sections and pathways devoted towards face recognition. The evolutionary significance of face recognition is briefly but effectively explained. The book ends a discussion of how the brain is able to integrate the multitude of complex processes into image formation. Neural oscillation and temporal binding theory are discussed , although the author seems to personally favor a more hierarchal organizing model. Overall the book is an excellent read for anyone interested in neuroscience, optics, or medicine. The book doesn’t get bogged down in technical details in is very concise. Most of the information and claims presentation and supported with a plethora of references to neuroscience experiments. Perhaps best of all each chapter ends with a bullet point summary of the key concepts. I highly recommend this book.

This text was intended to discuss the ethical issues that arise in the clinical practice of optometry and to give guidance to optometrists dealing with ethical issues in practice. It does the former very well but falls somewhat short in the latter. The issues discussed include ethical decision making in practice, the doctor-patient relationship, shared responsibilities in patient care, relationships with other professionals, screening practices, third party care and payment, new technology and equipment, and dealing with specialty populations such as children, the elderly, the institutionalized patient, the indigent patient, the partially sighted patient and multicultural patients.
