âI found this book extremely useful in passing the FRCOphth part 1. There are few self-assessment books available to aid preparation for this exam, and to my knowledge this is the only one that closely matches the new format. The chapters cover the majority of the syllabus with a good balance of simple to more demanding questions. Of course as with any question book, more in-depth background reading from one of the well-established texts is probably necessary to maximise your chances of passing, but most of the main concepts and facts seem to be covered. As well as being well-constructed, the questions were very relevant and there were a number of questions that came up in the exam which I had first learned about from this book.As noted by other reviewers, there are some mistakes in the answers, however these were obvious typo errors which could easily be spotted by simply reading the explanation texts. I did not find this an issue.I would highly recommend this book to anyone preparing for the FRCOphth part 1. As someone with no prior ophthalmology experience I personally found it particularly useful in directing my revision to the most important topics, along with Ferris’ MCQ book, before wading through the thicker texts.

âExtremely valuable tool for Part 1 revision with good explanations but sadly there are a lot of mistakes in the answers. I have counted about a dozen incorrect T/F’s so far which is really infuriating when you are testing yourself. Generally the explanations are sufficient to pick up on these but there are times when you need to further crossreference. Needs a proper proofread for subsequent editions.
âThis book is useful for FRCOPHTH part 1 revision but be aware that it contains many mistakes in the answer sections, often with the answer explanation contradicting the stated answer. This becomes quite frustrating as it occurs throughout the book.
In order to become a Consultant Ophthalmologist it is necessary to learn the skill of refraction and retinoscopy which requires a great deal of skill and practice. This full-colour, comprehensive revision guide has been specifically tailored for candidates of the mandatory Refraction Certificate Examination assessed by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

I noted that it had switched from hardcover to paperback, but what wasn’t obvious was that the size was changed to smaller pages and print, Not what people with low vision needs are going to find reader friendly. The reviews were minimal and I can see why. Edition 3 is not an improvement but a mistake on the part of the author and the publisher. Buyer beware!

The book contains multiple choice and short questions to help candidates prepare for the new Part II MRCOphth exams. The MCQs relate to optics, refraction and clinical ophthalmology. The short questions are similar to the OSCE format of the exam and contain good picture material. Clinical notes help describe the sequence of practical refraction and other methods.
