Description

M眉ller cells may be used in the future for novel therapeutic strategies to protect neurons against apoptosis (for example, somatic gene therapy), or to differentiate retinal neurons from M眉ller/stem cells. Meanwhile, a proper understanding of the gliotic responses of M眉ller cells in the diseased retina, and of their protective vs. detrimental effects, is essential for the development of efficient therapeutic strategies that use and stimulate the neuron-supportive/-protective – and prevent the destructive – mechanisms of gliosis.

猸怲his highly specialized monograph is both an excellent introduction to the subject of Mueller cell biology as well as a discussion of the latest findings and issues concerning the role of these interesting cells in health and disease. The text is clearly written and the book is filled with many good multicolor diagrams and images. Thus this book brought me swiftly up to speed on a subject new to my research. The main criticism that I have regards production of the volume. First, the format is rather small, and some of the details in the figures are consequently difficult to discern. Further, the quality of the paper and print is rather mediocre, sort of like a color laser xerox on very thin paper. Finally, the editing of the volume leaves a bit to be desired, with typos and missing references apparent.
