Description

Benjamin Franklin AwardAwarded annually by the Publishers Marketing Association (PMA), in 2000 the Benjamin Franklin Award was presented to the Stereo Atlas of Fluorescein and Indocyanine Green Angiography in the Professional/Technical category. Angiography is a diagnostic tool used to reveal circulation conditions. Dyes are injected into the patient’s body; a special fundus camera is used to provide a photographic visualization of the passage of the radiographic dye through intraocular vessels. The resulting angiogram shows the cytologic and histologic structure of abnormal or diseased tissue. The authors have developed a technique to reproduce angiograms as three-dimensional images. By looking at the images through the special glasses provided with the book, the clinician will gain a better understanding of the underlying pathology. Each selected case includes both regular photographs and 3-D angiograms showing diagnostic details in the early, middle, and late phases of the passage of the dye through the eye. More than just an atlas, the inclusion of stereographic and diagnostic information, much of it in the form of tables and lists, makes this a truly comprehensive clinical resource.* Contains a generous amount of three-dimensional images to enhance the understanding of specific ophthalmic conditions * Includes stereographic and diagnostic information, much of it in the form of tables and lists, making this more than just an atlas * Includes glasses for 3-D viewing!

Description

There has been growing acceptance of the insight that the methods so far used in the testing of visual functions have been inadequate when it comes to specific problems and should, therefore, be supplemented with more specialised methods for dynamic testing. As long as two decades ago, large-scale mass screening produced evidence to the effect that visual acuity, so far exclusively determined by means of still samples, was not identical with visual acuity in the ocular pursuit of moving targets (dynamic visual acuity). In other words, vision testing can, at present, provide little informaĀ tion on an individual’s capability of identification, appreciation, and judgeĀ ment of mobile objects. Spatial, three-dimensional perception of moving targets, hereafter reĀ ferred to as dynamic stereoacuity, is the particular subject on which findings are reported in this article. Findings of that kind are of considerable relevance to everyday life, since many of the phenomena that have to be three-dimensionally perceived in private life and in occupational practice, are in movement. So far, dynamic stereoacuity has never been systematicalĀ ly studied and is still a blank space on the maps of ophthalmology and physiology. This is equally true for dynamic stereoscopy in binocular vision as well as for perception on the basis of movement parallax, a phenomenon of differentiated contour displacement within a given field of vision which is also available to the monocular individual under conditions of head or body or object movement within the visual space.

Description

Strabismus is a subject that has always been looked with awe and fear due to its complexity. But the problems of binocular vision and ocular motility are the most common to be confronted by the ophthalmologist. Next to cataract surgery, squint surgery is the most common surgery performed by ophthalmic practitioners. There are far fewer facts to memories by rote compared to other specialties. It is more or less like mathematics, which serves all our life, provided we comprehend it. The attempt of this book is to simplify strabismus, demystify the myths surrounding it and make strabismus understood. This edition features a thorough revision of text, profusion of images, and full colour diagrams and clinical pictures. Also included is a CD containing the videos of important surgical procedures on horizontal rectus and the oblique muscles.

Description

A unique how-to guide on surgical management of strabismus from top experts in the field!Strabismus correction is the third most common ophthalmic surgery in the US, with 1.2 million procedures performed each year. Strabismus Surgery by renowned pediatric ophthalmologist Irene Ludwig provides comprehensive coverage of strabismus treatment – featuring state-of-the-art techniques based on recent anatomical research and discoveries. Throughout the text and accompanying videos, an impressive group of contributors share clinical pearls and firsthand knowledge.Recent research shows that strabismus has a mechanical etiology more frequently than previously thought, and that by directly correcting the mechanical defects, more targeted correction is possible than with traditional approaches. Accordingly, the book is organized by mechanism rather than strabismic deviations and patterns. Presented in four parts, each of which is further delineated by sections, this unique textbook includes 36 chapters starting with the fascinating history of strabismus surgery and concluding with future possible treatments.Key HighlightsNew surgical techniques designed to correct muscle displacements and muscle defects related to abnormalities of the extraocular muscle pulleys and intermuscular bandsRecognition and repair of stretched scar and flap tearA section dedicated to CNS-related causes of strabismus discusses state-of-the-art surgical approaches for conditions including nystagmus and cranial nerve palsiesA comprehensive summary of injection techniques using botulinum toxin and bupivacaine to correct strabismus, particularly in otherwise inoperable conditionsNinety strabismus surgery videos demonstrate a full spectrum of basic to advanced techniquesRemarkable illustrations beautifully capture the complex anatomy of the eye muscles and pulleysThe mechanistic approaches described in this outstanding resource will help trainees and seasoned ophthalmologists achieve more precise and lasting results. This book includes complimentary access to a digital copy on https://medone.thieme.com.

⭐Dr Ludwig provides an update of strabismus with a special focus on surgery. This book has excellent information on standard techniques and also newer techniques for both common procedures like recessions, resections, and plications but also less commonly known approaches such as pulley sleeve fusion surgery, posterior pulley fixation (pulley faden), and flap tear repair techniques. It has amazing pictures and photos so is like a surgical atlas. In addition, this book is unique for amazing videos that you can’t find elsewhere and for information on flap tear recognition and repair. A great read for trainees and also practicing physicians trying to gain new skills.

Description

Over the more than three decades of my life as a physician, I have been constantly amazed at how subtle and elegant nature is as a teacher. Our questions to her, though, must be clear and unambiguous. Otherwise, the answers we receive are likely to be misleading and confusing. As I have matured as a clinician, I have tried to improve my questions to increase my chances of receiving an answer. For the past decade, I have been pondering the subject of strabismus with which I have busied myself for practically two and one-half decades. I began to realize that my time, my share of wisdom, my abilities to carry out the prodigious work necessary to create a book out of nothing but thought, reading, and reflection on the work of others, as well as my own experience, were perhaps becoming limited. I do not doubt that they will become even more limited! Thus I have been led to write this book. Further, I am left in greater awe of prolific writers, particuĀ larly those who write with the precision and attention to detail necessary for a medical text. Let me warn the reader at the outset that my approach in this book is “teleologiĀ cal. ” I am well aware of the conflict between science’s notion of causality as only local and instrumental as opposed to the anthropomorphic notion of purpose or design in nature implied by the choice of this teleology.

Studies on Binocular Vision: Optics, Vision and Perspective from the Thirteenth to the Seventeenth Centuries (Archimedes, 47) (2016) by Dominique Raynaud PDF

Ebook Info

  • Published: 2016
  • Number of pages: 308 pages
  • Format: PDF
  • File Size: 7.93 MB
  • Authors: Dominique Raynaud

Description

This book clarifies the interrelationship between optics, vision and perspective before the Classical Age, examining binocularity in particular. The author shows how binocular vision was one of the key juncture points between the three concepts and readers will see how important it is to understand the approach that scholars once took. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the concept of Perspectiva – the Latin word for optics – encompassed many areas of enquiry that had been viewed since antiquity as interconnected, but which afterwards were separated: optics was incorporated into the field of physics (i.e., physical and geometrical optics), vision came to be regarded as the sum of various psycho-physiological mechanisms involved in the way the eye operates (i.e., physiological optics and psychology of vision) and the word ā€˜perspective’ was reserved for the mathematical representation of the external world (i.e., linear perspective). The author shows how this division, whichemerged as a result of the spread of the sciences in classical Europe, turns out to be an anachronism if we confront certain facts from the immediately preceding periods. It is essential to take into account the way medieval scholars posed the problem – which included all facets of the Latin word perspectiva – when exploring the events of this period. This book will appeal to a broad readership, from philosophers and historians of science, to those working in geometry, optics, ophthalmology and architecture.

Studies on Retinal and Choroidal Disorders (Oxidative Stress in Applied Basic Research and Clinical Practice) 2012th Edition (2012) by Robert D. Stratton PDF

Ebook Info

  • Published: 2012
  • Number of pages: 660 pages
  • Format: PDF
  • File Size: 9.67 MB
  • Authors: Robert D. Stratton

Description

Studies on Retinal and Choroidal Disorders examines the role that oxidative and nitrosative stress plays in the complex physiology and pathophysiology of the retina and choroid. Both the basic science researcher and the clinical practitioner can use this book as a guide to the current understanding of retinal and choroidal cellular mechanisms involved in aging and disease. Beginning with a review of oxidative stress and inflammation in the pathoetiology of AMD and a review of the complement system in the retina, the book then takes a detailed look at oxidative stress in lipid metabolism and oxidized lipoproteins in the retina. It examines the anti-apoptotic activity of α-crystallins in the presence of glutathione, oxidative stress in the mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum, the role of iron in retinal disease, the mechanisms of pathological VEGF expression, NAPDH oxidase mechanisms, and Hepatocyte Growth Factor in oxidative stress in the retina. A detailed look at the Ccl2-/-/Cx3cr1-/- mouse model of AMD follows. Then a detailed examination of the systemic changes in AMD is followed by a discussion of cerium oxide nanoparticle reduction of oxidative stress. Two chapters discuss progenitor cells in the cause and treatment of retinal diseases including AMD and diabetic retinopathy. Natural compounds in the prevention and treatment of retinal diseases are exhaustively presented, followed by a chapter on serotonin 5-HT1A receptor agonists in oxidative stress of the retina. The current anti-VEGF treatment strategies of neovascular AMD are then given. The volume continues with a detailed look at nitric oxide and inducible nitric oxide synthase in retinal vascular disease, an explanation of an in vivo technique of studying the effect of lipid hydroperoxides on circulating leucocytes in the retina, an excellent review of oxidative stress in retinopathy of prematurity, and a look at VEGFinduced oxidative stress in the retinal ganglion cell. The book ends with a detail examination of the role of carotenoids in retinal health and disease. These 31 chapters summarize what is known about oxidative stress in retinal and choroidal disorders. All those involved with degenerative diseases of the eye will find Studies on Retinal and Choroidal Disorders to be illuminating and comprehensive.
