Many of the young ophthalmologists preparing their higher degrees find ocular physiology rather dry or maybe even difficult. It is astonishing how frequently the practicing ophthalmologist has to recall his knowledge in physiology whenever he starts to examine a patient. From the moment he starts to examine the eyelids and pupillary reactions, passing through routine maneuvers as examination of the ocular motility, measurement of the visual acuity and intraocular pressure and up to the more sophisticated lines of investigation such as angiography, visual fields and electrophysiological tests. Unless the ophthalmologist is aware of the physiological basis of each and every technique, he will simply be unable to understand the significance and interpret the results. With this concept in mind, ocular physiology may turn out to be quite amusing. This book is an attempt, made by the authors, to provide a source of the necessary basic information that may help postgraduate ophthalmology students in their exams and hopefully guide them in their future practice.
