[PDF] Infection Control in the Intensive Care Unit, 3rd Edition (2011) by Hendrick K.F. van Saene

  • Format: PDF
  • File Size: 3.88 MB
  • Authors: Hendrick K.F. van Saene

Description

Intensive care is a rapidly changing area of medicine, and after four years from the 2nd edition the volume editors and authors have deemed necessary to update it. In the recent years, in fact, five new randomised controlled trials and five new meta-analyses demonstrate that selective decontamination of the digestive tract [SDD] is an antimicrobial prophylaxis to prevent severe infections of not only lower airways but also of blood. Additionally, SDD has been shown to reduce inflammation including multiple organ failure and mortality. An intriguing observation is the evidence that SDD using parenteral and enteral antimicrobials reduces rather than increases antimicrobial resistance. Moreover, a new chapter on microcirculation had been added.

Description

The ACMT National Case Conference (NCC) is a monthly discussion of novel or interesting cases in medical toxicology. Participation is through online webinar, and the conferences are recorded to allow for review at any time. The cases in this book are taken from recordings of NCC with edits and revisions by contributors and editors to demonstrate educational points. The majority of the case information is from the original recording and represents actual patient presentations. However, some of the details have been changed and fictional information added to enhance the educational value. This volume covers a broad range of toxicological topics, and specialty guidance is offered at the end of every case to aid non-toxicologists. The dilemmas are applicable to both academic and clinical medicine. A list of relevant questions is also provided for each case. Subjects include common toxicological problems, rare presentations of common problems, common problems with controversial treatments or difficult diagnoses, and rare problems.

[PDF] HIV-associated Hematological Malignancies (2016) by Hentrich, Marcus, Barta

Ebook Info

  • Published: 2016
  • Number of pages:
  • Format: PDF
  • File Size: 3.85 MB
  • Authors: Hentrich, Marcus, Barta

Description

This book presents a general introduction to and review of HIV-associated hematological malignancies, with a special focus on practical management issues. Each of the relevant malignancies is addressed individually, with an overview of treatment approaches, assessment of evidence regarding their efficacy, and discussion of therapeutic controversies. In addition, careful consideration is paid to issues in molecular and clinical pathology, epidemiological aspects, symptomatology, diagnosis, and risk factors. Separate chapters are devoted to autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplantation and to chemotherapy and interactions with antiretroviral agents. Many of the chapters are written by experts who have been instrumental in shifting the balance for people living with HIV and blood cancers. While two decades ago this diagnosis represented a death sentence, advances in treatment have transformed these cancers into often curable conditions. Nevertheless, optimal treatment of hematological malignancies remains a challenge, particularly in patients with severe immunosuppression. This book will be an invaluable source of information for all practitioners in the fields of clinical hematology and medical oncology and HIV medicine.

This has to be the most useful book ever. I carry it around constantly and it answered more than one question. It’s well organized and the information is accurate but short and easy to understand. It’s perfect for a pocket guide. I was a fan of bates pocket for a long time but i’m currently loving this one.
