Editorial Reviews: About the Author Dr. Larsen practiced nursing from 1969 until she retired in 2013. Her last 28 years of practice were as a faculty member and administrator in schools of nursing that offered BSN and MS degrees. Her clinical and educational expertise was chronic illness and the psychosocial concepts that are associated with patients and caregivers with chronic conditions. To that end, Dr. Larsen published her own personal account of chronic illness as she and her late husband battled cancer. Many of those experiences are included within this text. Dr. Larsen maintained certification as a rehabilitation registered nurse (CCRN) from 1986-2011. Dr. Larsen has been associated with this text, first as the author of the rehabilitation chapter, since 1995. She was asked by Ilene Lubkin to co-edit the text beginning with the 4th edition. With Ms. Lubkin’s death in 2005, she became the sole editor with the 6th edition. Dr. Larsen retired as Professor Emeritus from the University of Wyoming, Laramie, WY, in 2013.

Description

Neurologists, perhaps more so than any other physicians, take pride in their bedside skills. Good clinical mentorship is mandatory in order to develop such skills; however, due to an ever-increasing need for more efficient working structures, the time and dedication that mentorship requires may not always be available. Neurology at the Bedside was written to fill this gap. Neurology at the Bedside addresses neurology residents looking for a personal clinical mentor. It takes them by the hand and guides them through the whole patient encounter―from an efficient neurological history according to neuroanatomical key features and the bedside examination to differential diagnosis, diagnostic procedures and lastly, the treatment. At each step Neurology at the Bedside points out what is essential and what is not. One of the most innovative areas in medicine, neurology is under rapid development with ever-increasing diagnostic and therapeutic opportunities. This exciting progress called for an update of the text. All chapters are thoroughly revised and reflect the essential state-of-the-art knowledge neurologists need to acquire during their training.

Description

Minimally invasive cardiac surgery(MICS) is an integral component of every future cardiac surgeon’s training. There continues to be a growing global demand towards less invasive surgical techniques. Both cardiologist and cardiac surgeon form “heart teams” to provide patients with novel, minimally invasive procedures, with all their benefits.Less invasive techniques are often complex and require special knowhow and skills. This book offers an innovative approach to learning, utilizing QR code technology, which refers the reader to essential audio-visual material, which, along with the didactic text, focuses on practical aspects of minimally invasive cardiac surgery. In modern Heart Teams, and with the advent of the hybrid era, surgeons will only be able to survive if they have state-of-the-art skills in less invasive technologies, which can be incorporated in the hybrid theatre and/or trans-catheter arena. This text accompanies the surgeon along this path, and provides clinical advice and practical solutions, beyond the necessary basic knowledge. Which courses to visit, which videos to watch, which centres to join for serious training? How best to exploit public and multimedia? How to consent a patient into a MICS procedure? How to set up a MICS program or practice? In the era of value driven outcomes, and a shift towards shorter and better patient journeys, MICS is a skill that no heart surgeon can be without.Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery: A Practical Guideis a teaching resource, reference book and manual written by surgeons who both operate and teach the procedures described within.Provides access to online resources via QR codesIncludes links to videos and the e-version of the textActs as a gateway to a huge choice of minimally invasive cardiac surgery materials
