This book is devoted exclusively to differential diagnosis in pediatric dermatology. It covers the full range of relevant conditions: inherited skin disorders; nevi; viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections; acne; allergic diseases; autoimmune skin disorders; connective tissue diseases; tumors; and miscellaneous conditions. Each comparison addresses the differential diagnosis between two (or occasionally three or four) dermatological conditions, containing between two and six images and a short text emphasizing the clinical differences between the diseases in question. At the end of each chapter, a summary highlights one or two characteristics essential for the differential diagnosis. The author is an expert who, since 1982, has been responsible for a column devoted to the differential diagnosis of pediatric dermatology in the European Journal of Pediatric Dermatology. The volume will represent an ideal tool for pediatric dermatologists, pediatricians, and GPs, and will help them in the diagnostic process.

Description

The field of acute exacerbations in chronic respiratory disease is challenging: definitions of acute exacerbations differ amongst the diseases and their severity has proven difficult to define. The Guest Editors of this Monograph tackle this challenging area by bringing together articles from internationally recognised experts in the field of acute exacerbations in chronic lung diseases. The book is separated into three sections: the first considers the definition, severity and consequences of exacerbations in each disease; the second looks at exacerbation triggers; and the third discusses the treatment and prevention of exacerbations using pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. The book’s structure allows comparisons between the definitions, short- and long-term consequences, triggers and therapeutic management of different respiratory diseases. It serves as a complete reference that raises awareness about the importance of acute exacerbations in patients with chronic lung diseases.

[PDF] Androgen Excess Disorders in Women (Contemporary Endocrinology) (2006) by Ricardo Azziz

Ebook Info

  • Published: 2006
  • Number of pages:
  • Format: PDF
  • File Size: 6.73 MB
  • Authors: Ricardo Azziz

Description

The field of androgen excess disorders has advanced substantially since the original publication of this book. The Androgen Excess Society (AES) was founded to bring together investigators in the field. A better understanding of the screening, progression, and molecular genetics of nonclassic adrenal hyperplasia (NCAH) has improved the clinical care and diagnostic accuracy of these patients. New criteria for the diagnosis of the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) were proposed in Rotterdam, criteria that have resulted in controversy and, hopefully, initiation of new studies. The association of insulin resistance with PCOS has been strengthened, and the role of metformin in tre- ing the infertility of the PCOS has been validated. Risks for diabetes and, more cont- versially, cardiovascular disease in women with PCOS have received substantial investigation. Our understanding of the epidemiology and economic impact of these disorders has expanded, emphasizing their critical importance. These are but a few highlights of how the terrain has changed in a relatively brief period of time. In keeping with these advances, the title of this book has been revised to reflect the growing importance of PCOS as the most prevalent androgen excess disorder in women, and arguably, as the one that might have the most serious adverse consequences for general health. There are fewer chapters to provide a more focused elucidation of the area. Several chapters were penned by new (and young) authors who are conducting cutting-edge research in the field.
