Description

This book will consider several clinical and interventional topics for which there is uncertainty, continued debate and/or no consensus based on current guidelines. While there are numerous guidelines in cardiology, new and on-going trials that address new drugs treatments and procedures raise many unanswered questions. Furthermore, most practicing cardiologist taking care of the patients are likely unable to digest all of these studies or guidelines and necessarily correctly apply them to their patients. If one considers in the guidelines the frequent use of Level C (consensus), there are many areas or situations where no trial exists. Also, when applying the results of a trial to an individual patient, there can be uncertainty of how this patient should be managed based on the present body of evidence.

Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) is a rapidly expanding imaging method in cardiology which provides unparalleled diagnostic information about the heart. It is however a complex technique and though the availability of scanners is increasing quickly, the expertise required to perform the scans is limited. While no book is a substitute for experience, this handbook provides an invaluable guide to performing and interpreting the scans which should aid both new and experienced operators.

[PDF] Comparative Effectiveness in Surgical Oncology: Key Questions and How to Answer Them (2015) by Bilimoria, Karl Y, Minami, Christina A., Mahvi, David M. (Eds.)

Description

Despite tremendous recent advances in the treatment of most malignancies, there remain several critical questions for each cancer. This particularly true for the surgical management of solid-organ malignancies. Comparative effectiveness is a relatively new term which encompasses the age-old concepts of how best to treat cancer patients. Comparative effectiveness is defined as the direct comparison of healthcare interventions to determine which work best for which patients when considering the benefits and risks. The Institute of Medicine has defined comparative effectiveness research(CER) as the generation and synthesis of evidence that compares the benefits and harms of alternative methods to prevent, diagnose, treat, and monitor a clinical condition or to improve the delivery of care. CER is certainly best done with well-conducted randomized controlled trials. Unfortunately, clinical trials are not always feasible owing to the impracticality of conducting the trial, the considerable cost, and the time required to complete the trial. These challenges are even more pronounced with respect to surgical treatment. Thus alternative approaches may need to be considered in order to address pressing questions in the care of the oncology patient. These approaches may include well-conducted retrospective cohort studies from cancer registries and other data sources, decision and cost-effectiveness analyses, and other novel methodologies. This book lays out the current critical questions for each major malignancy and proposes approaches to gain answers to these pressing questions.

[PDF] How the Immune System Works – 5th Edition (2016) by Lauren M. Sompayrac

Description

How the Immune System Works has helped thousands of students understand what’s in their big, thick, immunology textbooks. In his book, Dr. Sompayrac cuts through the jargon and details to reveal, in simple language, the essence of this complex subject.

Reviews

In 1998, I wrote the first edition of How the Immune System Works because I couldn’t find a book that would give my students an overall view of the immune system. What was missing was a short book that tells, in simple language, how the immune system fits together – a book that presents the big picture of the immune system, without the jargon and the details. This, the newest edition of my little book, continues that tradition.
For the fifth edition, I’ve updated all the lectures to include the latest information. I’ve also added a new lecture on the intestinal immune system. Our knowledge of how the immune system deals with the trillions of bacteria, viruses, and parasites that inhabit our intestines is still evolving. However, enough is now known to see the rough outlines of how this important arm of the immune system works. In addition to this new material, I’ve also made some “style changes” that I think will make the fifth edition even easier to use. For example, I’ve included a short “Heads Up!” section at the beginning of each lecture to alert my readers to the important topics that will be covered. Also, essential words and phrases are now highlighted in red where they first appear in the text, and a summary of important concepts is included at the end of each lecture.
Although How the Immune System Works is used as the textbook for some immunology courses, I suspect that most students buy this book and then carry it around in a brown paper bag – so their professor won’t know what they are reading in order to make sense of the lectures! Indeed, How the Immune System Works has become a bit of a cult book, as thousands of students have used it to help them master this difficult subject. I’ve been told that I even have a “fan club” on Facebook. How cool is that?
I believe this fifth edition is the best one yet. I hope you will think so too. – Review by Author –

[PDF] Functional Symptoms in Pediatric Disease: A Clinical Guide (2014) by Anbar, Ran D.

Description

Many children with medical conditions fail to improve despite physicians’ best efforts. Sometimes, we ascribe this failure to lack of adherence to therapy or to the severity of the condition. What we often fail to appreciate, however is that sometimes the lack of improvement can be explained by the patients’ psychological states. The first section of Functional Symptoms in Pediatric Disease: A Clinical Guide teaches children’s health care providers to recognize functional symptoms that can complicate organic disease as well as symptoms that are believed to be purely functional in origin. Literature reviews, case studies and quizzes are provided in each chapter, with video demonstrations included in some of the chapters. The second section of the book will help clinicians differentiate the patients for whom referral to a mental health provider is mandatory from those for whom other approaches may be useful. For the latter group, the book teaches clinicians to empower themselves by learning how to incorporate various therapies for functional disorders into their practice, including biofeedback, basic cognitive behavioral therapy techniques, hypnosis, acupressure, yoga and meditation. Practical strategies for obtaining training in these modalities are provided in the appendix. Useful for practicing clinicians including pediatricians, family practitioners, pediatric subspecialists, child psychiatrists, psychologists, other mental health care providers and practitioners of alternative and complementary medicine, Functional Symptoms in Pediatric Disease: A Clinical Guide is an important new book that will help children’s health care providers consider the possible impact of functional contributions to the clinical presentation of their patients.

[PDF] Cancer, Intimacy and Sexuality: A Practical Approach (2017) by Reisman, Yacov, Gianotten, WoetL

Description

This book provides a wide-ranging overview of the sexual consequences of cancer and its treatment with the aim of equipping physicians and other health care providers with the awareness and knowledge required in order to offer patients effective treatment. While sexuality may not be the primary focus for cancer patients, at some point, whether because of sexual changes or relationship issues, many patients come to acknowledge the effects that cancer and its treatment have had on their sexuality. Although the impacts are frequently similar, significant variation is observed. Some patients experience changes in all phases of sexual response, while others experience none; moreover, the consequences of the effects may be felt differently by patients and partners. Unfortunately, many physicians and health care providers remain insufficiently aware of the impact of cancer on sexuality and/or lack knowledge about the concerns of patients and the available treatments and coping strategies. A further issue is the reticence of physicians to discuss sexuality and the fear of sexologists to talk to patients about cancer. Readers will find this book to be a rich source of help in overcoming these constraints and delivering suitable care to patients.
