The 4th edition of Metabolism and Nutrition follows the excellent crash course series. This is the second crash course book I have reviewed, the first being neurobiology. The good points of this book are consistent with the other crash course books; the self assessment materials, including single best answer and extending matching questions, are extremely useful for consolidation of learning, and the hints and tips sections in each chapter are brilliant for quick revision. Additionally, the `clinical notes’ in each section enable the connection to be made between knowledge and clinical application; however, in my opinion, more clinical notes would enhance the book.

Aesthetically, the book is not as pleasing as there is a blue colour scheme throughout, including all diagrams and tables. This results in labelling being unclear and pictures being generally difficult to understand, for example, in a picture of the abdomen, the organs are difficult to differentiate from each other! The use of different colours within the book would make it easier to distinguish all aspects of the diagrams at a glance.

A crash course in metabolism and nutrition, what a very novel idea! I see it is designed with the medical student in mind i.e a trainee or junior doctor, wanting to expend their knowledge in the field. As a well rounded knowledgable person on the subject of nutrition and human metabolic processes, there are some terms I am familiar with from ny student days when I had to learn about these complex biological concepts at A level! Nonetheless, i shall be having a go at it in due course to see if I can be on a par with the medics out there. Also, a very reasonable price, as most medical textbooks are well over 100 pounds a copy!
