The prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) and diabetic retinop- athy (DR), including diabetic macular edema (DME), is on the rise. Therapeutic options for the management of DR and DME have expanded significantly in recent years, and underlying mechanisms of DME, the significance of persistent edema, and their implications for the selection of therapy are comprehen- sively looked into. Global studies have proven the efficacy of these modalities; however, they may not be very applicable in the Indian scenario. The aim of this publication is to have a consensus on workup, diagnosis and management of diabetic macular edema in the Indian setting. An experienced panel of retina specialists from India and abroad, put the manage- ment of DME into a modern perspective via a series of clinical scenarios. Opinions in this document are discussed in three sections; Disease related outcomes, Patient related outcomes and Treatment related outcomes. The ultimate goal is for retina specialists and ophthalmologists who treat DME, to develop long-term strategies for the management of DME.
