Description
Seizures are common in newborn infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy and are highly associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. This review discusses the impact of seizure activity on the developing brain, the poor efficacy and potential neurotoxicity of current anticonvulsants (like phenobarbital and phenytoin), and the need for randomized controlled trials to determine the safety and efficacy of treatments combined with therapeutic hypothermia.
