Description

During an inflammatory process, shift in the cellular metabolism is associated with an increase in extracellular acidification largely attributed to lactate. This review analyzes recent advances regarding the pleiotropic effects of lactate on inflammation, suggesting it could exert differential effects depending on the metabolic status, cell type, and pathological process. Lactate modulates signaling pathways via various targets, including G-protein coupled receptors and transcription factors such as NF kB and HIF-1, influencing the expression of cytokines, chemokines, and enzymes associated with immune response.
