What I didn’t like so much: with a publication date of 2014, I would have expected it to be more up to date on hotly researched areas of study than it was (a very few topics were woefully outdated by many years, not months). While I recognize our understanding of disease processes are changing daily, mearly mentioning that a topic is evolving rapidly (epigenetics, for instance) would have gone far in making this text better able to stand up to time, almost helping to excuse any outdated material, if that makes sense. At the very least, it would have served well to provide cues that a current literature search may be warranted. Elsevier’s Evolve was a little disappointing, too… Chapter reviews were exactly those found at the end of the chapters in the book, no more, no less and often lacked pertinent material needed for study; only the chapter “high points”, I guess you could say. These reviews were downloadable in a Word document, though, so personal alterations to add content as needed for study was a simple enough matter. That’s a plus. Occasionally, there were some good graphics to aid in understanding, but not every Evolve chapter offered them. Honestly, I got more from watching YouTube for clarification on some topics (reputable sources, such as universities and disease foundations, of course). Evolve, does offer practice quizzes, but they were painfully short and didn’t cover all the material one should expect from an instructor’s quizzes or tests (again, only the high points). All in all, though, it’s a decent text given the content; and the layout was perfect for my style of learning and study habits. I’ll be hanging on to this one for future reference.

I passed my CT registry. The pictures are very clear and this book is the best for sectional anatomy. I studied from this book and the Mosby book and passed my test with no problem. Most people may think this book has too much info, but it has a lot of useful information and you will not be disappointed.

Not impressed at all. The spine was extreamly beat up and 2 inches of the bottom was ripped off. I literally unwrapped the book and opened the cover and what little was holding the cover to the pages split off. Then a month in or so when i couldn’t avoid it and actually had to read a chapter, the pages that were attached to whatever was left of the brittle seperated spine started coming off. I actually had to fix the book myself just for the 4 times I couldn’t avoid using it. I had to use clear packing tape to make sure the front cover wouldn’t remove itself from the back one, and I just ordered Books by hand PVA non acidic glue to try to attempt to put the spine back together. All in all I spent more money fixing the book then renting it.

Reviews

The focus on active learning methods stands out and distinguishes this book; the authors present the material in a case-based, question-and-answer format, rather than as traditional narrative text. They accomplish this while still producing a well-organized and complete text…This thorough approach allows the book to be used as a resource for review or as a primary text. The authors of this book not only are experts in the field about which they write, but also are experts in education and the active learning model. This latter expertise is very evident, as the book is engaging, comprehensive, and remarkably easy to process despite its breadth and volume. The thorough histopathology section shines in particular as compared to other textbooks and review books in the field. The illustrations and photos in the “focus questions” section are first-rate…This new approach to learning will be a valuable tool for both residents and practicing physicians in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. The larger education world has just taken notice of active learning, so as otolaryngoloists, we should applaud Drs. Shin and Cunningham, as early innovators in pioneering this approach in a fine text for our specialty. –Marc J. Gibber, MD, Bronx New York, Annals in Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology, (2013)

Expanded to 134 chapters and enhanced by new color photos and new contributing authors, this edition is an up-to-date, easy-to-use reference to both the surgical technique and the relevant anatomy of nearly all the procedures you will face.

Reviews

It is a true shame that I have to give this book 2 stars. The writing is fabulous and the diagrams are great. The explanations for the surgical indications and the procedures are also wonderful….extremely useful. Nevertheless, as mentioned in a previous review, many chapters of common procedures for a general surgery resident (i.e. parotidectomy) are e-chapters. The Echapters would be fine and useful if I could download a pdf version to read on my iPad. However, they are only viewable in the LWW proprietary flash viewer which is buggy, not useable on my iPad, and is only accessible until this version is updated which means eventually you will lose access to much of the chapters of the book. A much smarter idea for LWW would have been to include an Inkling ebook version of this with purchase of hardcopy so that you could lighten your load while allowing the chapters to be easily accessible. Truly a lost opportunity.

Regardless, even though the content included is great this is low value for the fact that you will have a hard time getting to some chapters. Steer clear of this book and find another descriptive operative technique book. Consider Operative techniques in Surgery by Mulholland, its excellent includes a useable and awesome ebook version with print, and you won’t get screwed out of chapters
