Reviews

I give this 3 stars because I don’t really know. My professor said that we would need to use this textbook a lot in the class for homework assignments so I bought it. But it turns out that I opened the book 1 time for 1 homework assignment. The book wasn’t useful for the rest of the class. So really, I don’t know much about this book. What I did read was useful but I read one chapter of the book. One thing I did really like about this book was that it was pretty cheap to buy new. Most new science textbooks are well over $100 but this one runs about $60-70 which is a steal. So kudos to the publishing company for not gouging poor college students.

The book itself is written in a very basic way, not the most helpful for college classes. The mastering microbiology that comes with it though is beyond worth it and is worth 5 stars on its own. It has an animation clearly explaining every single concept you can imagine with quizzes and study tools.
Also a little word to teh wise,
if you’re a college student looking for a cheap book and there’s a mastering included in it, just get the matsering, it includes a free digital copy of the book (another reason mastering is so fantastic)

Hits what my A&P text misses. This book is much more thorough. Due to ADHD, I sometimes get psychological roadblock when I study a text, so it’s nice to be able to mix things up and read the same subjects with a different view and more pics of cells than in my A&P book. The pics are awesome and very helpful. I wouldn’t recommend it if you’ve never cracked open a bio or human bio book. It’s got a ton of info, enough for a novice to get overwhelmed. I would have. I also recommend histology guide on the webs too. It’s very handy and easy to use with this book. I would still recommend this book over the web alone because it explains what you’re seeing in the guide better and in greater detail than my A&P book would. If I knew then what I know now, I could get away with this book and/or Costanzo’s physiology and the internet for anatomy or a dedicated anatomy book(Netter’s looks pretty good to me) for an undergrad A&P. My Marieb A&P book cost me 300. This plus Netter’s 70 dollar Anatomy book and Costanzo’s 45 dollar physiology is certainly doable, more thorough, and much cheaper.

All four tapes in the series are just over an hour of material total. (approx. 20 minutes each after the titles and intros) It uses a lot of unspecified and inaccurate “jargon.” Listen closely to the terms and words used in tapes 3 & 4. The first tape is the most bizarre material I have ever seen in my 45 years as a massage therapist and registered nurse (I am 65 and became a CMT at 20 years of age a RN at 25). In my opinion the draping information presented by the obese, older woman in the black “outfit” verges on mentally pathological, as in obsessive compulsive. As presented the positioning, “packing” with bolsters and the elaborate “costuming” of the client will take much of the one hour, that could be used to actually care for the client. Every serious student of massage should view, share and discuss this material as evidence of how weird massage education became in this time period. I believe the author had some personal issues and was attempting to impose them on those viewing the videos. Impressionable novice student therapists may have been severely damaged by this material in my opinion. Please buy any copy you can, view it, become amused and appalled, then archive it so it will not be repeated or destroy it to prevent is being taken as factual. The five stars are based on it needing to be viewed by every reasonable practitioner and every knowledgeable massage client.

[PDF] Principles of Anatomy and Physiology, 12th Edition (2008) by Gerard J. Tortora

  • Published: 2008
  • Number of pages: 1336

Description

The new edition of Principles of Anatomy and Physiology maintains the superb balance between structure and function. It continues to emphasize the correlations between normal physiology and pathophysiology, normal anatomy and pathology, and homeostasis and homeostatic imbalances. The acclaimed illustration program is also even better along with the redevelopment of many of the figures depicting the toughest topics to grasp.

Reviews

This is my first A&P book, and I’ve not enjoyed it as much as I would’ve liked. I would prefer to receive information in a way that starts at a high level, then breaks down that information in a consecutive way, breaking things down more and more until we get to low level information. This book gives very brief overview of each section, then dives directly to the bottom of the ocean where you’re stuck in a completely alien environment, with a whole new language to describe every minute thing you observe. This didn’t work for me.

This book fit the course I took very well. The combination of the two and a lot of extra studying from this book helped me pass the NHA exam top of my class. But I will say there was way more information than you actually needed to know.

Freaking long and huge textbook. It was mandatory. Had a lot of useless and repetitive stuff, but if you were able to get past all the pretentious big words you could get what the author was trying to say. I wish I could remember all of it though. But >2000 pages, I think I barely retained 10 pages from the whole book. I liked this one a bit more than my other nursing school books because it had quite a few pictures and diagrams unlike other textbooks that just have gigantic blocks of words with no breaks in between.

The book covers…key foundations of anatomy and physiology; focusing primarily on the musculoskeletal system, as well as providing a basic introduction to the body systems. Detailed but simple diagrams illustrate joint movement and muscle structure, and photographs show the range of normal movement for joints and limbs.
