Description

Practical, handy guide to chest x-ray interpretation, designed for medical students and foundation doctors on the go and highly affordable for those rotating through modular courses or working on attachment. Highly affordable price and convenient pocket size format – fits in back pocket! Indispensable aid: all hospital doctors deal with chest radiographs but students and junior doctors lack confidence interpreting them. Logical, sequential content: relevant basic science; understanding normal results and the building blocks of abnormal results; then clinical disorders. Clinical disorders illustrated by a full page chest radiograph with brief accompanying text on facing page that clearly identifies the defining features of the X-Ray (in other words, what is it that makes this pneumothorax?).

I’m a final year medical student at Oxford currently preparing for finals in medicine and surgery. I recently bought this following a recommendation from a friend and I have found it very useful. I think the symptom-based approach, i.e. chapters based around a topic like ‘shortness of breath’, forces you to think diagnostically and so is especially useful for consolidation. Having said this, it would also have been of great benefit at the start of clinical school when I was looking for a framework with which to approach the common problems. The chapters succeed in logically taking you through from history to examination to investigation interpretation and management options while forcing critical analysis of the case at each stage.

Description

Cardiovascular disease remains the major cause of morbidity and mortality throughout developed countries and is also rapidly increasing in developing countries. Cardiovascular medicine and the specialty of cardiology continue to expand, and the remit of the cardiologist is forever broader with the development of new sub-specialties. The Oxford Handbook of Cardiology provides a comprehensive but concise guide to all modern cardiological practice with an emphasis on practical clinical management in many different contexts. This second edition addresses all the key advances made in the field since the previous edition, including interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and pharmacology. It expands the remit to medical students and the more junior doctor while retaining the level of detail required by more senior practitioners within the field.

Description

A veteran hockey writer takes on hockey culture and the NHL–addressing the games most controversial issue Whether its on-ice fist fights or head shots into the glass, hockey has become a nightly news spectacle–with players pummeling and bashing each other across the ice like drunken gladiators. And while the NHL may actually condone on-ice violence as a ticket draw, diehard hockey fan and expert Adam Proteau argues against hockeys transformation into a thuggish blood sport. In Fighting the Good Fight, Proteau sheds light on the many perspectives of those in and around the game, with interviews of current and former NHL stars, coaches, general managers, and league executives, as well as medical experts. One of the most well-known media figures on the hockey scene today, famous for his funny, feisty observations as a writer for the Toronto Star and The Hockey News and commentator on CBC radio and TV, Adam Proteau is also one of the few mainstream media voices who is vehemently anti-fig

One of the best of the best. Has a more far-reaching use than books merely aimed at passing the national prescribing safety exam. There is more subtlety, more information, and the numerous case scenarios included in the textbook hit most of the common areas of knowledge you will be expected to know and prescribe for at the start of your career. There are well written summaries and guidance e.g. explaining the reasoning behind giving a drug, ways to calculate dose for body weight, paediatric patients etc. Covers almost everything you need to familiarise yourself with before beginning to prescribe as a new health professional.

An indispensable guide to the examination of children, one of the most intimidating aspects of clinical practice for medical students and junior doctors, as it involves dealing with newborn babies through to teenagers (often also the child’s parents or guardians) and requires different communication skills and knowledge. * Logical, sequential content: introductory chapters on the principles of paediatric history taking and examination, then chapters devoted to each body system and a closing chapter on clinical procedures.

Provides information on how aging affects the body, aging-related diseases, and treatment options, in a work divided into two sections that focus on medical issues and quality of life issues.

Reviews

This book could be recommended for psychiatrists who have a firm grasp on basic principles of evaluation and treatment of patients, but would like advice on the real world dilemmas and pitfalls of everyday clinical work. True to its title, it emphasizes clinical skill development and shares an abundance of wisdom based upon the real world of psychiatric practice. With a forthright and frankly honest voice, the authors succeed in conjuring up the sense that one is turning to a seasoned mentor for advice.

Review “I was personally very interested in reading the book, which well represents the state of the art and perspectives on the subject, and also indicates the tools for further studies in the updated and voluminous bibliography. Therefore, I recommend this publication at first to psychiatrists, clinicians, and researchers in neurosciences, clearly including residents and students in the field. Ò€¦ it is a great field of knowledge development that this book invites us to face.” (Luigi Mansi, European Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, Vol. 46 (10), 2019) –This text refers to the hardcover edition.

I do not have enough words to describe the value of this book especially for Neurology residents. The book is first divided into different neurological categories. In each category the topics that have been addressed are commonly seen cases. The differential diagnosis is presented in most systematic manner with the possible causes you as a neurologist cannot afford to miss.Great book that every Neurology resident must carry in their pockets. It has been life saver for me in number of clinical discussions especially when it comes to generating neurological differntial diagnosis in ‘Case Management’ conferences and bed side case evaluation.
