I got this in the last two weeks of my pediatrics clerkship, and the bottom line is that I’d wish I’d had it the entire time. I used significant portions of Pretest, Case Files, and First Aid for Step 2 for this rotation as well, and BRS combined the best of all of them, in my opinion.

Maybe it was more “current” in 2015, but it’s not up to date for 2018. As a 3rd year resident, I bought this book to supplement board studying, I now regret it. Some quick examples of how out to date this text is are: it doesn’t mention ASCVD risk, it has LDL goals (which was changed 2014), it says there are only 2 IUD available in the US, there are at least 5, but skyla came out in 2013, so if they had been up to date for 2015, they would have said 3. I know this seems petty, but every chapter I’ve looked at seems to be omitting something important or just seems very dated. They will need to do quite a bit of editing to this book to reflect the current practice standards.

Description

The One Stop Doc books have been designed by medical students for medical students to consolidate their knowledge, subject by subject and system by system. For each area studied there are only so many questions an examiner can ask; they are presented here with clear explanations that allow the student to revise thoroughly one topic at a time.

By no means an authoritative guide to all conditions it is extremely good as a quick grab reference when you want to confirm your suspicions, finalise that list of differential diagnosis from a non typical presentation. Often I find when shadowing or taking consultations in general practice, when the patient leaves the room there is one particular factor I should have checked in the history or examination but I cannot remember what it is. Usually I wrack my brain, make a mental note to check later and then forget. Churchills GP is perfect to have in you pocket on clinics to refresh your memory, preventing that niggling little “what was it” which hinders you during the consult.

This book stands as the standard single reference for all healthcare workers managing AIDS patients. This concise text discusses every aspect of the disease, from its epidemiology and all that is known of the aetiology, to diagnosis and recognition of the different manifestations of the disease. Special emphasis is placed on the care of patients both within and outside the hospital with chapters on counselling and the psycho-social aspects, palliative care and pain control, and two chapters by patients who are HIV positive which give insight into what it is like to be infected. The book is written and edited by internationally respected specialists.

Reviews

It’s a book on Ortho mainly from the British perspective. Lacks much in the way of exam tests and common clinical pearls which was a bit disappointing. Would not recommend this book for the average family doc who is trying to learn more and get better at ortho diagnosis. Sorry for being so honest but really….
