Reviews

A wealth of practical experience and clinical wisdom have been collected in this book – the sections on contraindications; pre-, peri- and postoperative care; the numerous therapeutic options; the management of co-morbidity; and the editorial comments (included even when the author of the chapter was the editor himself!) make this a text no general surgeon can ignore. Description

This work includes a foreword by James Stageman. ‘This book has been produced to serve as a resource for community physicians who bring medical residents into their practices and train them in their offices. This book has been designed with the busy community physician in mind. Each chapter is intended to serve as a practical, concise, easily read, stand alone resource on the topic covered.’ – Paul M. Paulman, Audrey A. Paulman, Jeff D. Harrison, Jeff Susman and Kate Finkelstein, in the Preface. ‘A comprehensive handbook for precepting residents. Although modern technology can change the way in which students acquire knowledge and skills, there is no substitute for a true mentor. In medicine, perhaps more than in any other profession, our mentors have always enjoyed a special place in our hearts and minds. Although some professional athletes may contend that “I am not a role model”, there is no doubt where you and I, as preceptors, stand on this issue. We are role models. We are mentors and upon us falls the responsibility to prepare tomorrow’s physicians for careers in public service that we can only begin to comprehend.’ – James Stageman, in the Foreword. Written by practicing and academic physicians with decades of experience, this book is the only complete guide written specifically for busy community physicians who teach medical residents in their office. Each chapter is short, concise, easily read and serves as a stand alone reference on the topic covered. Its contents include: identifying learning needs and creating the learning environment; setting goals and objectives, providing feedback and evaluating residents; involving your office staff in teaching and integrating practice management into the preceptorship; preparing the community and practice for the residents and collaborating with local hospitals; documenting supervision and addressing ACGME competencies; and dealing with regulatory bodies and addressing liability issues. This book is an invaluable guide for practicing physicians teaching medical residents in the workplace, particularly those in family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics, and a useful reference for residency program directors.

After earning a baccalaureate degree in biology from St. Mary’s College (Notre Dame, Indiana) and a master’s degree in physiology from the Ohio State University, Susannah Nelson Longenbaker began her teaching career at Columbus State Community College in Columbus, Ohio. She continues to teach anatomy and physiology courses there, as she has for almost 30 years. During that time, she earned the college’s Distinguished Teaching Award and Ohio Magazine’s Excellence in Education award. She founded and serves as co-coordinator for Columbus State Community College Fantastic Fridays and consults for Fantastic Fridays Thinking Science. These community outreach programs (funded in part by grants from McGraw-Hill Corporation) introduce middle school and high school students to the fun and excitement of laboratory science. In 2006, Sue was offered a unique opportunity by Dr. Sylvia Mader: to become the primary author for Understanding Human Anatomy and Physiology. Dr. Mader began her long career as a college biology professor, then left the classroom to become one of the most prolific authors of biology and human biology textbooks in the country. Her works are well known for their direct writing style and carefully crafted pedagogy. Dr. Mader’s many titles have been published and enjoyed by students worldwide for almost 40 years.

Description

This book is the first to provide balanced examination of both pediatric liver disease and liver transplantation – two topics that are inherently related, given that most chronic liver disorders eventually require organ replacement. The different forms of liver disease encountered in the pediatric age group are first discussed in a series of disease-specific chapters that have a reader-friendly, uniform structure covering pathophysiology, diagnostic and treatment algorithms, clinical cases, and transition to adult care. Key topics in the field of liver transplantation are then addressed. Examples include indications and contraindications, surgical techniques and complications, immunosuppression, in pediatric liver transplantation, acute and chronic rejection and allograft dysfunction, and CMV and EBV infection in transplant recipients, long-term graft injury and tolerance. A section on pediatric hepatology across the world includes chapters presenting the features and management of pediatric liver disease in South-America, Africa and Asia. A closing section considers what the future holds for pediatric liver disease and its management, including novel genetic testing, cell therapy and gene therapy. Pediatric Hepatology and Liver Transplantation will be of value for a range of practitioners, from residents making their first approach to pediatric liver disease through to specialists working in transplantation centers.

Description

The second edition of this atlas has been extensively revised to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopy for upper and lower gastrointestinal diseases. The coverage ranges from basic but highly effective procedures like cold snare polypectomy and variceal ligation to sophisticated procedures such as peroral endoscopic myotomy and endoscopic submucosal dissection. New instruments, for example over-the-scope clips and various stents, are introduced in the relevant chapters. Furthermore, several chapters have been added to cover cutting-edge technologies for endoscopic treatment of complex conditions, including refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease and duodenal neoplasia. Many pictures have been exchanged for newer ones, most of them high-definition endoscopy photos, and schematic illustrations are used to ensure clear understanding of complex therapeutic procedures. As in the first edition, special tips of practical value are highlighted and potential pitfalls are identified, but in addition instructive cases have been added at the end of chapters. The second edition of Therapeutic Gastrointestinal Endoscopy will be an essential resource for all therapeutic endoscopists.

Description

This unique and comprehensive text discusses the main causes of posterior hip pathology and recent advances in evaluation and treatment of those conditions, including posterior hip pain caused by discogenic, intrapelvic and extrapelvic disorders. Opening with description of the specific anatomy and biomechanics of the posterior hip and the etiology of hip disease, the next few chapters superbly discuss and illustrate the clinical, psychological and radiological assessment of the patient. Analysis with differential diagnosis of various causes of posterior hip pain, including nerve entrapment and impingement, is then presented in detail, followed by discussion of the essentials of the lumbopelvic complex as a source of pain. Later chapters cover vascular claudication as a cause of posterior hip pain, how to evaluate and manage the perioperative scenario, and physical therapy evaluation and treatment.

The level at which the book is pitched will be particularly useful to any practicing foot and ankle surgeons, but fellows, residents, and students also will find it highly useful. The book will definitely satisfy its intended audience. … This is a gem of a book, made the better by its all‐inclusive, multidisciplinary approach. … It is to be highly commended — and recommended — for taking this approach, and all institutions should possess a copy.
