Really good book. Probably why I passed my pediatrics rotation in medical school.

However, it uses WAYYYY too many abbreviations. Sometimes I’d be reading and then see an abbreviation that I had no idea about and I’d have to go back several pages even to find where they mentioned the original meaning of it. It became a hugely frustrating exercise. Sometimes they didn’t even explain the abbreviation originally and it was somehow implied that the reader should know it, even if it is unheard of.

Some of the organization is weird, too. Like there is an end of chapter practice question where the answer is to give a systemic course of steroids for an asthma exacerbation, but it’s not on the algorithm page for asthma. Instead, it’s at the end of a written section on a totally different part of the chapter.

Description

Minimally invasive surgery has impacted the outcomes of surgery more than any technology since the development of sterile technique. The hard science has demonstrated that decrease in wound complications and recovery time has created the biggest gap with open approaches to surgery. The total economic benefit may be unfathomable when looked at comprehensively. Integral to the rise of minimal access and therapeutic techniques in surgery has been the growth of technological improvements over time. Beginning with insufflators, videoscopy, and energy devices, that evolution has continued into the development of tele-surgical devices that feature full articulation of instruments, high-resolution 3-D optics, and computer assisted movement. This has come with controversy – as the dominant manufacturer of robotic assisted devices, Intuitive Surgical, and their generations of da Vinci surgical platforms, holds enough market share to spur cries of monopoly and financial excess. However, with over 3000 world-wide systems in use, and over 6000 peer-reviewed research articles, the impact of robotic surgery cannot be ignored. The current state of data suggests equivalency in most procedures with regard to traditional outcome measures, equal or somewhat elevated costs, with specific areas of superiority.

Review “All figures and tables are accompanied by useful legends. A very useful feature is the group of appendixes, which serves as a condensed version of the book and can be used for a quick lookup of criteria. As a book that aims to standardize respiratory cytology reporting, its ultimate success lies in the acceptance by practicing cytopathologists. … this book is a well‐written and much‐needed guideline from the Papanicolaou Society to further push for standardization of cytopathology reporting.” (Keluo Yao, Doody’s Book Reviews, May 10, 2019) –This text refers to the paperback edition.

It is well-established, through extensive peer-reviewed published research, that physical activity and exercise training can impact the reproductive endocrine system of women. This ground-breaking, comprehensive title presents a range of unique insights into the opposite question: how the reproductive endocrine system of women affects their exercise ability. More precisely, the thematic question explored in this work is: if exercise affects reproductive hormones, conversely then could the reproductive hormones have physiological effects unrelated to reproduction that influence the capacity of women to exercise? In exploring this question, the goal is to better understand the unique physiology of women and whether female sex hormones might account for some of the variance in physiological performance between amenorrheic and eumenorrheic women, and within women across the age span as they experience menarche to menopause. Sex Hormones, Exercise and Women: Scientific and Clinical Aspects synthesizes the research by exploring the physiology and psychology behind these occurrences. This novel title will not only be of interest to researchers, exercise scientists, graduate students, and clinicians; it will also serve as a source of valuable information for female athletes and their trainers in the context of preparing for competitions. Mader’s Understanding Human Anatomy and Physiology continues to be the perfect text for a one-semester course, because it was designed for this audience from the very first edition. The text is celebrating its tenth anniversary with a complete facelift, which I believe makes the content even more approachable, user friendly and exciting. Each chapter now begins with an infographic that details fascinating facts about the chapter’s subject.

This book is a high-quality compilation of both common and uncommon endoscopic presentations of inflammatory bowel disease, malignancy (both CAN as well as lymphoma), and IBD mimickers. Unlike other textbooks on IBD, such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Diagnosis and Therapeutics, 3rd edition, Cohen (Springer, 2017), this book is intended to be a quick source of reference for pathology encountered during endoscopic surveillance rather than a comprehensive overview of epidemiology, biologic therapeutics, and clinical management strategies. –Doody –This text refers to the hardcover edition.
