This clinically oriented book provides a complete overview of Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) Retinal Detachment, a difficult surgical challenge faced by ophthalmologists. Small gauge vitrectomy offers new possibilities to tackle this difficult pathology however this surgical approach may differ from one retinal surgeon to the next. To reflect the various approaches to treating PVR, the book is divided up in three parts. In the first part the authors describe the complete variety of surgical techniques applied to PVR detachment. In the second section, well-known international surgeons from Europe to Asia describe their personal surgical approach for PVR detachment and demonstrate their surgery in videos. In the third part, a large variety of retinal surgeons show case reports of PVR retinal detachment to give a complete overview of dealing with this complex retinal disorder.

Review From the reviews:”This beautifully illustrated book attempts to explain the complex anatomy of the temporal bone using CT an MR microscopy. Ò€¦ This book is written primarily for radiologists, but it is useful for all students of temporal bone anatomy as well as practicing otolaryngologists. Ò€¦ This will be highly useful to otolaryngology residents, practicing otologisst, and neurotologists. Ò€¦ It is a high-quality book that provides some of the most detailed descriptions of temporal bone anatomy I have encountered and the imaging complements the text well.” (Eric Roos Snyder, Doody’s Review Service, April, 2009)”The book is very well organized and beautifully presented. This book would be very useful to anyone involved with imaging of the temporal bone. Students seeking an introduction to imaging can use this as an effective tool for programmed learning. More advanced radiologists will appreciate the additional detail provided by the microimaging techniques combined with the beautifully reconstructed and reformatted images. Otolaryngologists would also appreciate this book. It is a superb imaging atlas of the temporal bone.” (Hugh Curtin, Radiology, Vol. 263 (1), April, 2012) –This text refers to the hardcover edition.

Description

The clinical laboratory plays a critical role in the diagnosis and management of endocrine and related metabolic disorders, which are leading causes of morbidity and mortality in children and adults. The Handbook of Diagnostic Endocrinology, Third Edition, provides a ready reference for the evaluation, diagnosis, and monitoring of such disorders. This revision incorporates translational medicine, connecting what clinicians need to know with those in research providing a clinical context to which they can relate their molecular findings. This book solves the needs of clinicians and researchers by bringing together in one book endocrinology at the molecular and clinical levels. As the intricacies of intracellular signaling have become better understood, states of hormone resistance are now increasingly recognized. The most common endocrinopathy in westernized countries, the metabolic syndrome, results, to a large extent, from insulin resistance. The complexity of the circulating forms of various hormones are acknowledged in this revision.

Description

Imaging of the temporal bone has recently been advanced with multidetector CT and high-field MR imaging to the point where radiologists and clinicians must familiarize themselves with anatomy that was previously not resolvable on older generation scanners. Most anatomic reference texts rely on photomicrographs of gross temporal bone dissections and low-power microtomed histological sections to identify clinically relevant anatomy. By contrast, this unique temporal bone atlas uses state of the art imaging technology to display middle and inner ear anatomy in multiplanar two- and three-dimensional formats. In addition to in vivo imaging with standard multidetector CT and 3-T MR, the authors have employed CT and MR microscopy techniques to image temporal bone specimens ex vivo, providing anatomic detail not yet attainable in a clinical imaging practice. Also included is a CD that allows the user to scroll through the CT and MR microscopy datasets in three orthogonal planes of section.

The purpose [of this book] is to summarize the data on the role of nutraceuticals in cancer management. This is a highly noteworthy and ambitious goal. The results of multiple surveys, personal encounters, and experiences shared by healthcare practitioners reflect a tremendous public interest on the subject as well as consumption of the supplements in discussion. It is difficult to underestimate the usefulness of such a book for medical and allied health educational purposes.’

Description

Dietary supplements and nutraceuticals such as Vitamin A and D, Omega-3 and probiotics are used as part of the cancer treatment as complimenting the main therapy. Several Nutraceuticals have shown to boost the immune responses, while emerging clinical studies and other research suggests that some plant-based agents may, indeed, impact late-stage cancer, influencing molecular processes corrupted by tumor cells to evade detection, expand clonally, and invade surrounding tissues.
