Description

Through a unique interdisciplinary perspective on health care quality and safety, McLaughlin & Kaluzny’s Continuous Quality Improvement in Health Care, Fifth Edition covers the subjects of operations management, organizational behavior, and healthcare service delivery. With a broad focus on both the philosophy and processes of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), the challenges of implementation and institutionalization are addressed using examples from a variety of health care organizations, including primary care clinics, public health departments, and academic health centers. Significantly revised and updated throughout, the Fifth Edition offers a greater focus on practical application and incorporates contributions from leading health care quality. Additionally, the text has been reorganized and streamlined into 14 chapters, in lieu of the prior edition’s 20 chapters, to make it an even more effective teaching and learning tool. While being more applied and practical, it does so without sacrificing depth. Extensive citations and detailed examples help students to understand the rationale and the most recent research and practice evidence that underpins the new techniques described. The 5th Edition features: – Streamlined coverage for enhanced teachability. – New chapters on Implementation Science, Lean Six Sigma, and Understanding Variation, Tools and Data Sources for CQI in Health Care – Greater focus on application. For example, the new implementation science chapter includes an appendix describing how to apply implementation science. – Discussion of the Quadruple Aim of health care and impact on CQI; how Public Health has institutionalized CQI to ensure community health quality; how CQI has been more broadly adopted in Low to Middle Income Countries; and much more.

The audience is cardiothoracic surgery residents and attending surgeons, as well as cardiologists, although intended more for the surgery professionals. … This is a useful recap of aortic valve repair and is helpful in continuing the discussion of repair techniques for this often-replaced valve. Review “The authors provided an impressively informative and clear overview of various pathologies with the support of current literature and effective tables and figures. With over 120 references, the first chapter of the book provides a very detailed description on the laryngeal anatomy, neuroanatomy, and respiratory function involved with voice. Some chapters are more comprehensive than others. For example, the chapter on laryngeal manifestations of gastrointestinal disorders is over 90 pages with almost 600 references possibly because three of the five contributors to this chapter work specifically in the field of gastroenterology or general surgery. The book covers a large breath of information with a broad target audience, and would be most useful for medical students, otolaryngologists in training, or laryngologists. The authors and contributors did an impressive job on garnering relevant clinical information from fields outside of otolaryngology and assembling into coherent material applicable to otolaryngology. Thus, it would be a great addition to an academic library.” –Catherina Yang & John P. Bent, MD, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology (November 2019)”Laryngeal Manifestations of Systemic Diseases is a unique reference manual which will cater to a wide potential audience. It would represent a good text for laryngologists coming across patients with known comorbidities or as new diagnoses of underlying pathologies, but would serve equally well as an encyclopaedia for general practitioners or internal medical specialists as to whether particular diseases are known to cause laryngeal symptoms. […] The book is well-written in clear and interesting language with useful section subheadings. There is a wide variety of relevant and high-quality clinical photographs and diagrams, particularly in the respiratory chapter […] It is good value for money and would be a great addition to a general ENT as a good starting place for trainees to plan clinical reviews or provide background for writing up case series.” –Elizabeth Maughan, in ENT & Audiology News (September 2020)

Reviews

This book details the anatomy and physiology of the auditory system, with well-balanced coverage of the peripheral and central nervous systems, and an emphasis on clinical applications of the scientific theory. The clinical correlates make for very interesting reading, often including key research reviews or case studies relevant to a practising audiologist. I found the science more relevant and easier to grasp through these links to clinical practice. The second edition also adds a useful chapter on development. auditory system plasticity and ageing effects that focuses on clinical implications of lifetime changes of the auditory system.

Description

Osteoporosis is the most common bone disease and is associated with pathological fractures that can lead to significant morbidity. It represents an economic burden to the health care system, directly linked to an ageing population. Guidelines on osteoporosis prevention have been published but these do not provide the required specialised knowledge for the treating physician. This book ‘fills the gap’ and focuses on the principles of surgical and medical treatment of osteoporosis. It aims to improve education and provide answers based on current evidence, helping doctors follow best practice, improve patient care and outcomes, and minimise the complications of medical and surgical management.
