Review “This very instructive text will be of interest to all levels of neurosurgical trainees and practitioners, as well as to any medical specialists who want to understand the clinically important issues regarding the conditions discussed. I cant think of a better contemporary review text to preparefor oral board or re-certification examinations.” –R. Michael Scott, MD, Fellows Family Chair in Pediatric Neurosurgery, Emeritus Neurosurgeon-in-Chief, Boston Children’s Hospital; Professor of Neurosurgery, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA”The authors present the spectrum of pediatric neurosurgery in a unique way, developing each chapter from the perspective of an individual case. Therapeutic options are considered, surgical techniques are described in detail, and postoperative management and complications are discussed. The text islikely to be a valuable resource for residents in their early years of training and for those reviewing for oral board exams.” –Leland Albright, MD, Professor of Neurosurgery, Retd., University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, Madison, WI

Now we have before us the second edition of Dr. McCaslin s book, and it s even better than the first. Same firsthand clinical experience, same serious scholarship, same lucid writing, but now there s updated and expanded information on eye movement neurophysiology and a new set of illustrations. Also new is a whole chapter listing common (and some not so common) dizziness-causing disorders. Dr. McCaslin has outdone himself here. For each disorder, he provides historical background, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, laboratory findings, and treatment. He also provides several useful appendices a dizziness questionnaire, suggested alerting tasks to be used during caloric testing, and a table listing reliability and localizing value of various ENG/VNG findings.

Fascia, Function, and Medical Applications is essential reading for medical and allied health practitioners who want to bring scientific insights of the importance of fascia to human health into their clinical practices.
Review From the reviews: This book provides a complete review of the normal and diseased temporal bone. It comprises 16 chapters, each with a clinician’s view of the subject under discussion. … This is an easy-to-read book. The quality of the figures and tables is good and the references are new. … My impression of this book is positive. It is of value to residents, radiologists, and neuroradiologists, and also to clinicians dealing with otoneurological problems.” (T. Tikkakoski, Acta Radiologica, Vol. 45 (4), 2004)

Using it for my teaching–but not a “required” text. It is rather advanced, if not an expert in neurology, you have to weed through it and select aspects for your didactic. The depth of content is what I love about this writing.

This book elucidates the genetic, biological, morphological and functional aspects of telocytes. Telocytes are a recently defined type of interstitial (stromal) cells, with very long (tens to hundreds of micrometres) and very thin prolongations (mostly below the resolving power of light microscopy). The book describes the presence of telocytes in various organs and tissues, details their morphological characteristics, explores their genomic and proteomic profiles, puts forward preclinical evidence of their application, and discusses their potential in the context of clinical therapeutics. As such, it offers a valuable guide for biologists and clinicians alike. Dr. Xiangdong Wang is a distinguished Professor of Medicine. He is Director of the Shanghai Institute of Clinical Bioinformatics, Executive Director of the Clinical Science Institute at Fudan University Zhongshan Hospital, Shanghai, China; Dr. Dragos Cretoiu is an Associate Professor of Pathology at the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Bucharest. Description

Part of the Neurosurgery by Example series, this volume on pediatric neurosurgery presents exemplary cases in which renowned authors guide readers through the assessment and planning, decision making, surgical procedure, after care, and complication management of common and uncommon disorders. As pediatric neurosurgery approximates the anatomical and pathophysiological breadth of all specialty areas of adult neurosurgery, the cases provided are exemplary of those that are more relevant to, and seen in higher frequency, in pediatrics. The cases also demonstrate presentation and management appropriate for pediatrics, as both are distinct in pediatric compared to adult neurosurgery.

Description

The electrocardiogram (ECG) remains the most accessible and inexpensive diagnostic tool to evaluate the patient presenting with symptoms suggestive of acute myocardial ischemia. It plays a crucial role in decision making about the aggressiveness of therapy especially in relation to reperfusion therapy, because such therapy has resulted in a considerable reduction in mortality from acute myocardial infarction. Several factors play a role in the amount of myocardial tissue that can be salvaged by reperfusion therapy, such as the time interval between onset of coronary occlusion and reperfusion, site and size of the jeopardized area, type of reperfusion attempt (thrombolytic agent or an intracoronary catheter intervention), presence or absence of risk factors for thrombolytic agents, etc. Most important in decision making on reperfusion therapy and the type of intervention is to look for markers indicating a higher mortality rate from myocardial infarction. The ECG is a reliable, inexpensive, non-invasive instrument to obtain that information. Recently it has become clear that both in anterior and inferior myocardial infarction, the ECG frequently allows not only to identify the infarct related coronary artery, but also the site of occlusion in that artery and therefore the size of the jeopardized area. Obviously, the more proximal the occlusion, the larger the area at risk and the more aggressive the reperfusion attempt.
