⭐Khorram and Liu do a fantastic job of making everything about diabetic eye disease easy to understand for the patient and anyone else interested in the subject. The book is divided into three sections: 1) Diabetes and the eye, 2) The Eye Exam, 3) Treatment, and 4) Controlling Diabetes and Getting Healthy. Throughout the book, they focus on the information that is relevant to the patient, giving background on the physiology of disease and structure of the eye with just the right amount of depth and detail. Khorram points out that people have a tendency not to go to exams unless they are “feeling sick” and explains how diabetic eye disease can progress even when no symptoms are present, and really helps you understand the biological basis behind how powerful preventative care is. The eye is such a critical part of how we live daily that I really think the advice he provides is critical for anyone with diabetes who might be in danger of developing diabetic eye disease. In addition, Khorram and Liu thoroughly go through every step of the eye exam and treatment in a compassionate and comforting manner, without dumbing down anything. A lot of anxiety comes from the unknown, but the thorough and understandable explanations in this book take much of that away and make the entire process non-intimidating.I’d full-heartedly recommend this book to anyone with diabetes or if you know someone with diabetes. Regardless of your scientific background, you will be able to understand the disease better, know your treatment options, and feel better about going through the journey. ⭐This was an incredibly clear and helpful book. As someone with minimal prior knowledge about the eye, I found this book to be very approachable, and I feel more knowledgeable about the eye now. The clear language made it very easy to follow, and the authors truly did a magnificent job of covering the most important information. As a student interested in health and medicine, I especially appreciated the balance of scientific terms and every-day language. Finally, the breakdown of the book contributed to its approachability. The first part, “Diabetes and the Eye,” gives a thorough background about the eye and essentially shows the reader why they should care about how diabetes affects vision. The second part, “The Eye Exam,” was an enjoyable section to read, as I did not know there were more parts to an eye exam other than the classic Snellen eye chart. The third part, “Treatment,” contains invaluable information that I do not doubt a patient with diabetic eye disease would use to help guide their course of treatment. Finally, the last section, “Controlling Diabetes and Getting Healthy,” gives a concise overview of steps patients can take to make an even greater (positive) impact on their visual health. Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone with diabetic eye diseases or people who are simply interested in learning more about the eye–it is concise yet thorough, and I feel much more knowledgeable having read this book.

⭐Too often, there is a disconnect between what doctors and patients know. This leads to negative outcomes in medicine whereby patients feel unempowered and unable to take control of their own health, left thinking they don’t know enough to take care of themselves. The result is not only a loss of confidence and a feeling that one cannot take care of themselves, but worse health outcomes as patients think they can’t make changes to help themselves – essentially responsibility for health and medical care is displaced to doctors as patients doubt themselves. There is great power in education. Patients will feel that they can indeed take care of themselves, that they do know what’s going on in their bodies, and with this knowledge, they will feel responsible and empowered to live healthier lives.This book is what medicine needs – an easy to understand guide not only to diabetic eye disease but the eye’s anatomy in general. It is extremely easy to read and is accessible to patients without formal medical or scientific backgrounds. It can teach people about how diabetes affects their vision, but also how the eye is composed so that people may take proactive steps to ensure optimum eye health.I wholeheartedly recommend this book for those facing uncertanties with their vision – especially those who don’t know what’s going on and want to develop their knowledge base and regain their autonomy.

⭐I know little about eyes and diabetic eye disease, but I found this book very easy to read and follow (as its subtitle describes “an easy to understand guide”). It walks readers step by step, covering basics of diabetes and the eye, how to do eye exam and how to receive treatment.
