Radiotherapy of Intraocular and Orbital Tumors (Medical Radiology) (1993) by Robert H. Sagerman PDF

Ebook Info

  • Published: 1993
  • Number of pages: 424 pages
  • Format: PDF
  • File Size: 19.93 MB
  • Authors: Robert H. Sagerman

Description

This 2nd edition provides up-to-date information on the diagnosis and treatment of cancers of the eye and orbit. The 1st edition has been significantly revised. The most recent data with respect to retinoblastoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, and melanoma are included, and there are a number of chapters by new contributors, lending this edition a more broadly based, international character. The presenting signs and symptoms of tumors are outlined, and indications for the various imaging modalities are analyzed. Treatment techniques, together with their results in respect of survival and local tumor control, are described in detail; throughout, special attention is paid to multimodality therapy. Potential complications of radiotherapy are described, and relevant information is provided on the management of radiation effects. The emphasis is on the need for a holistic approach to the patient that recognizes the wider role of irradiation of the eye now that more careful treatment planning is possible.

⭐Most would probably find this book boring. I rather liked it. It is a good mixture of basic radiation physics mixed with discussions of treatment modalities for a variety of tumors. The author list is impressive with all the top people in ocular oncology (many european) writing the various chapters. And of course, as it is with most oncology texts, you don’t REALLLLY find out the authors’ treatment protocols and decision tree, but this book contains more detail than many others. There also chapters on diagnostic testing, imaging, and other things. The books introduction is actually one of the best I have read and I found Dr. Finger’s chapter on plaque radiotherapy to be one of the better book chapters on that subject. I highly recommend this book.

⭐I find this book very useful. I think the pictures are great. Every disease has several pictures to make sure you have a good idea of what your looking at. I also like the concept of providing the clinician with a couple of quick definitive tests that can be done to make a “rapid diagnosis.” I think that is a nice feature. My only criticism is that there is not enough text in the book. I never thought I would hear myself say that about a book but it is true in this case. The book provides a nice bullet point summary of each disease and treatment options, but there are times when I am not familiar with the treatment or how to perform the diagnostic tests and I wish there was more discussion of that.

⭐I think many of the photos aren’t distinct enough to be useful. For sure this is a limitation of the print process. An answer to this might be a link to a web page available to purchasers of the book. Also, there was the traditional presentation of the red-herrings that one seldom sees in practice and not enough of the unusual “normal” variations that are sometimes stumpers to clinicians. The printed info basically is available for free at […]This booklet isn’t helpful to me. However, I suppose it fills a niche for some clinicians.

⭐I think this book is very useful but not the cream of the crop as far as retina books are concerned. I think a lot of the pictures are great. I love the short summaries it provides for each disease. I like this book as a secondary resource or as a quick refresher so I think it is useful for these reasons but I would not use it as solitary or primary text due to the small amount of information that it summarizes for each disease. But I like having the book and refer to it from time to time.
