The Cornea in Normal Condition and in Groenouw’s Macular Dystrophy (2011) by J. François PDF

Description

The three most striking characteristics of the cornea are: a) Its structure or rather its perfectly regular architectonic, by virtue of which it is transparent. b) The absence of vessels, the cornea being nourished by the perilimbic vessels, the endothelial surface in communication with the aqueous humour and the epithelial surface in contact with the pre-corneal film. c) The very slow turnover of the cells, that is to say the keratocytes, with the result that the metabolism of the cornea is very weak. It is this third characteristic which justifies our present investigation. The keratocytes, which are apparently inactive, have in fact a latent activity. They can be activated by central corneal incisions and also by tissue cultures. Under either of those conditions, the keratocytes become very active, develop all the cytoplasmic organites and produce mucopoly saccharides as well as the precursors of the collagen (Fig. 1). In order to study the pathological keratocyte, we chose a storage disease, wherein the catabolism of the mucopolysaccharides is blocked, namely the macular dystrophy of the cornea. We undertook the same investigation both for normal and for pathologi cal corneas and studied the keratocyte ‘in situ’ and in tissue cultures using various microscopical and histochemical techniques. In macular dystrophy, we investigated also the deteriorations secondary to the changes in the keratocytes.

The Evolutionary Basis of Strabismus and Nystagmus in Children: Landmark Essays (2021) by Michael C. Brodsky PDF

Ebook Info

  • Published: 2021
  • Number of pages: 262 pages
  • Format: PDF
  • File Size: 6.04 MB
  • Authors: Michael C. Brodsky

Description

This text is a comprehensive collection and discussion of scientific essays that define the pathogenesis of common forms of pediatric strabismus and nystagmus in terms of their common evolutionary mechanisms. The goal of this book is to assemble these essays, to provide a definitive source for current clinicians to use along with follow up comments to help direct future scientific research in the field of pediatric ophthalmology. This book includes 20 original essays written by Michael C. Brodsky which mechanistically explain and unify such enigmatic conditions such as infantile esotropia, latent nystagmus, primary oblique muscle overreaction action, dissociated vertical divergence, infantile nystagmus, and intermittent exotropia in terms of ancestral evolutionary reflexes which become expressed in different ways to generate these disorders. This collection of essays is poised to become a classic reference, providing the necessary neurological framework for contextualizing unique ocular motor disorder and understanding the evolutionary mechanisms responsible for their development in early childhood. Written with focused interest for pediatric ophthalmologists and neuro-ophthalmologists, this reference will also find audience with ophthalmologists, neurologists, evolutionary biologists, and neuroscientists.

⭐Dr. Brodsky’s evolutionary perspective has forever altered the field of pediatric ophthalmology. It represents a tectonic shift in thinking about some of the most common and important eye movement disorders in children. The impact of Dr. Brodsky’s analyses and conclusions, as outlined in this collection of annotated essays, cannot be overstated. Not only does Brodsky brilliantly explain the origin of many pediatric ocular motility disorders, but he also demonstrates how these seemingly disparate conditions are, in fact, interrelated. Each field of human study has at least one text that has brought unity, coherence and conceptual validity out of a morass of muddled misconceptions. In biology, it was Darwin’s “Origin of the Species.” In quantitative mechanics, it was Newton’s “Principia.” And now, in pediatric ophthalmology, it’s Brodsky’s “Evolutionary Basis of Strabismus and Nystagmus.”

Description

This volume presents a basic consensus of how the aqueous humor is formed and exits through the trabecular meshwork and canal of Schlemm. It presents a timely update to current knowledge of the molecular transport mechanisms which underlie aqueous humor dynamics. In addition, it provides a concise description of the clinical approaches used for assessing these basic transport processes. The book emphasizes the phenomenon of the diurnal rhythm of aqueous humor formation, from both the clinical and molecular points of view. This phenomenon provides the major indication that aqueous humor secretion is regulated. Key Features* Introduces the mechanisms of aqueous humor formation and outflow* Describes the clinical study of aqueous humor dynamics* Exposes the research approaches currently applied* Emphasizes the diurnal rhythm of aqueous humor secretion* Provides awareness of unanswered questions

⭐Fantastic resource.

⭐Adequate but too detailed. Chern is more condensed and higher yield. If you have money to spare, get both. If you can only afford one question book (or have time to only review one book), then get the Chern.

⭐I bought this review book in order to prepare for my written boards in 2004. I found that there were numerous mistakes in the answer sections making this a very hard review manual to get through. I would not recommend this book if you are preparing for boards. I would get Chern’s review manual and question and answer book for board review studying.

⭐I bought this book as a question book for studying for the OKAPS during my second year of residency. I had already used the Chern review book and Chern question book the year before. This book has far more questions than the Chern book. This book also covers some topics that are not covered well or at all in the Chern book such as pathology, fundamentals, general medicine, and refractive surgery. The problem I have with this book is that the questions themselves are not high yield. There are a LOT of questions on minutia. While the Chern question book had fewer questions, I found that the content covered in Chern was more relevant to what showed up on the OKAPS. But if you have extra time, use this book too. And I suspect that much of the “minutia” in this book wont seem like minutia anymore when studying for the real boards. Anyway, I would recommend this book for some additional questions to work after the Chern question book.As a side note, its true there are some errors in the book, but there aren’t that many

⭐This book was a little over my head or more complicated than my brain wants to read, but I hopefully got enough out of it to help. I have been diagnosed with macular degeneration in both eyes, glaucoma, and was told my optic nerve is enlarged. So I am just looking for answers about what I can do to help keep my eyesight. I am doing what the doctor told me to do, but that really isn’t much.

⭐This is a good book, I would have liked it to be more of a test yourself workbook. The photos are not always as clear as I would have preferred but the information is very good.

⭐This book is good in any topics I don’t understand it would help to

⭐Best book

⭐The thing about this book is, Optics book should be a short, crisp and a conceptual one…this book doesn’t teach you any mathematical solution, no concepts whatsoever….just pages and pages of repeat information, boring information, irrelevant information….and it goes on forever….I read a chapter on Contact lenses, it’s 60 pages long and he didn’t even bother to teach how to calculate the power of the contact lens…and he’s giving 5 pages of how to fit one in eye, and 10 pages later, the same thing again. This is a boring, boring book. It compels me to leave Ophthalmology…Sir Kindly write a little interesting book, never could go through your Undergraduate Book too, had to buy other books for survival.
