The book is riddled with errors. If you planning on using this as an adjunct in a Neuro class (med school or otherwise) I would suggest on holding off or looking elsewhere. On a plus note, I like the format. If an updated version comes out with corrections, I would happily purchase it.

[PDF] Crack the Core Exam 4th Edition – Vol 1: Strategy guide and comprehensive study manual (2017) by Prometheus Lionhart M.D.

Description

This is the best single book available to study for the ABR Core Exam. There are simply no other comprehensive study guides in print for the Core Exam, so buying this is a no-brainer. Other people have used Core Radiology by Mandell and Primer of Diagnostic Imaging (which are good), but these predate the ABR Core Exam and do not contain any strategy/gamesmanship for the exam. I think it is remarkable that one individual published the entire book (and under a pen name at that). Bravo!

I bought this book for a Nurse Practitioner course. There are many positives about this book, but a couple of negatives come to mind and I’ll mention them, too. On the positive side, detailed health history recommendations and their rationale are included for each chapter along with a chapter focused review of systems in detail. However, I wish that there were more pictures of normal findings. It’s nice to know what abnormal findings look like, but first, I need to know what characterizes a normal exam. For instance, in my many years of hospital nursing I have never done an otoscopic ear exam. This book provides a great image of a TM with bulging membrane related to acute OM. There is a picture on the next page showing a perforated TM. Great, but what does a normal TM actually look like? A sketched TM image showing the cone of light and the umbo, among other findings, is not nearly as useful as an image designating those same landmarks. This book’s focus is on the adult and only cursory mention is made of pediatric and geriatric variations. They could have either skipped these two sub areas or else included a useful amount of information on the pediatric and geriatric exams. Another negative is that our instructor told us, after class members all bought this book, that she didn’t like it and prefers the Bates’ Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking, which is now in it’s 11th edition. Interestingly, the Bates’ book is highlighted on Amazon as the #1 Best Seller in Nursing Diagnosis. I wish we could have used that book for our class.

In terms of content, this book works perfectly for a beginner. The first chapter begins with the anatomy and physiology of the retina. The second covers ancillary testing from fluorescein angiography to OCT. The third chapter then provides the clinical features and differential diagnosis for a variety of retinal findings such as a cherry red spot. From there, the book continues as mentioned in the editorial review. I felt the first three chapters gave me a good foundation to understand the diseases presented later on. The writing is clear and concise throughout.
