Description

From a reassessment of osteoporosis to contributing factors, clinical applications of antiosteoporotic agents, and rehabilitation, this book examines various aspects of the disease and its treatment. Edited and written from an orthopedic perspective, it approaches osteoporosis as both a metabolic disease and a locomotive syndrome. As orthopedic surgeons in Japan are responsible for pharmacotherapy, surgery, and pain control, the authors pursue a comprehensive approach, focusing especially on the effect on muscles and on fracture operation rather than expanding the scope to bone density.

Great stand alone book for 10yr board recertification…. But best used in concert with a textbook or subject specific white papers.

Description

Taking an expansive perspective on osteoporosis and its ramifications, but with a central focus on the transition from diagnosis to treatment, rehabilitation and current management options, this practical guide discusses the most recent knowledge and literature on osteoporosis for the wide cross-section of professionals involved in treating this pervasive condition. It enables the physician or physician extender to develop a strategy for diagnosing osteoporosis, including detailed laboratory tests as well as imaging, interpreting findings, and determining options appropriate to the needs of individual patients. The material offers guidance on how to treat osteoporosis patients who are suffering from neurological conditions such as brain and spinal cord injuries, rheumatologic syndromes, peripheral neuropathies, gastrointestinal conditions, as well as cardiopulmonary, liver and kidney disorders, among others. Additional chapters address management of osteoporosis in men, patients with advanced medical illnesses including various forms of cancer, organ failure and organ transplantation, pediatric onset of primary and secondary osteoporosis, and the female athlete triad. Covering the gamut of considerations presented by osteoporosis patients, Osteoporosis Rehabilitation: A Practical Approach is a timely, interdisciplinary resource for orthopedists, rehabilitation specialists, primary care physicians, nurses and any other professionals who bring their expertise to bear on the management of this common condition.

This is a great book, but perhaps not comprehensive enough for a medical student. I still had to look things up in other books/online. But if you already know the details, this is a great reference and great keep you up to date with literature.

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS EDITION: “I have rarely learnt so much, in seconds of thumbing through a textbook, as I did reading about central sleep apnoea…[It] is ideal for fast access reference and revision on the flight to the exit exams! In practice I have opened this many times, picking subjects at random and found the writing style reader friendly throughout.” –Liam M. Great review text. No references for anything, so you just kind of have to assume they are using the best possible resources for their answers.

I truly love reading this book, which contains both routine and rare cases, both stimulating my thinking. Designed for GI specialty trainees, this book is too advanced for medical residents in internship. But it is very good for senior internal medicine residents doing GI electives. It provides up-to-date knowledge, while encouraging the readers to think about differential diagnoses and management steps. This book is great, because doctors learn better when they are forced to think through cases. Obviously, reading case books is no where near the experience of seeing real patients. But it is hard for a resident to see all these diseases covered in this book during general medicine training. For GI fellows, these cases are probably what they should be comfortable managing, I assume.
