Description

This book is a collection of over 50 case histories of patients with predominantly acute neurological illness, with particular emphasis on conditions that present to physicians in both acute general (Internal) medicine and neurology, including headache, encephalopathy and altered consciousness, behavioural disturbance, seizures and focal deficits. The majority of the cases have endocrine, vascular, infectious or metabolic aetiologies and include examples of common conditions presenting in unusual ways. The differential diagnosis in such cases is often broad but rapid diagnosis and treatment is often paramount. Each case is outlined in brief and is followed by several questions on clinically important aspects of the diagnosis and management. The answers are accompanied by a detailed discussion of the differential diagnosis, together with other clinically important aspects of the condition. The text is complimented by over 170 radiographic illustrations. The question-and-answer format is designed to enhance the reader’s diagnostic ability and clinical understanding.

The book itself is very good – easy to read and digest but I am disappointed with the print quality of this book. I borrowed this book from my uni library and then decided to buy it. I was shocked in difference in quality – the text is grainy and the photo pictures are not as clear. The attached picture shows the library and purchased book together (the purchased one is the bottom half of the picture).

The new series of Crash Course continues to provide readers with complete coverage of the MBBS curriculum in an easy-to-read, user-friendly manner. Building on the success of previous editions, the new Crash Courses retain the popular and unique features that so characterised the earlier volumes. All Crash Courses have been fully updated throughout.

Not surprisingly for a third edition, the coverage of the curriculum is very good. I don’t believe any major new sections need to be added. I like the format of the book. Most textbooks are either pre-clinical or clinical, which doesn’t really suit the modern course, but here the balance is effective. The clinical application boxes are especially informative and should keep students interested.

I am a PA student in my clinical year. I used this book almost exclusively to help prepare for my PAEA end of rotation exam. This book helped me to do very well on my EOR – much better than I was expecting or hoping for. The topics emphasized in this book were very similar to the topics emphasized on the exam and some of the practice questions were almost identical to exam questions. I would highly recommend this to any PA student – especially for clinicals and EOR exams.

Amazon recommend this to me after I viewed “100 Tricks to Appear Smart in Meetings”. I was a bit surprised, as they seemed to be totally unrelated titles, but I went into it with an open mind. I’m really glad that I did. It can be a bit difficult to combine the concepts from the two books since the typical corporate meeting room isn’t quite as well equipped as the average radiology lab, but that’s half the fun. Improvisation is one of the best ways to really grasp the material in a practical and tangible way. (I won’t give away all my tricks and tips, but you can do a lot with the spray bottles from the whiteboard cleaner, ethernet cables and some fine-tipped ballpoint pens. Let your imagination be your guide)

Nothing will get you to consensus faster than a quick ad-hoc carotid stenting or any of the wide variety of drain insertions outlined in the text. If you really want to wow your audience, I find a nephrostomy is a great clsoer. When that blood suddenly turns bright yellow, your peers can’t help but be impressed and agree to any proposal that you have on the table (hopefully out of reach of any stray fluids.)
